How could you possibly know that?
Actually from what I've been skimming over just now , unfortunately it looks possible he knew -- apparently Kennedy and Doc Rivers have had a longstanding feud because Doc was alleged to have made some remark about it back in his Celtics days. So Rondo was there... and quite possibly oops.

I don't question whether Rondo knew. I question how @New Era could have known that "pretty much everybody in the NBA already knew that Kennedy was gay."

If Rondo used the slur in question I am fully on board with him being suspended.

Any player that uses a racial slur or a gender/sexual orientation based slur towards anyone in the arena (but especially a referee or fan) should be suspended. Whether or not some other player did something similar without suspension doesn't matter to me. There shouldn't be any tolerance for discrimination in the NBA.
I completely agree 100%. I liked Rondo's performance. Still do. Just disappointed in him as a person. Apparently hate speech is acceptable in his mind. You can't have it both ways.

This goes back to Rondos Celtics days. Kennedy freaking hated the Celtics, like on a Joey Crawford vs Mavs level while Doc was there. It's allegedly due to comments Doc made about Kennedy's sexuality, which is well known in NBA circles. If that's true hard to see how Rondo didn't know what button he was pushing.

This comes from Tim Donaghy. Not sure what reason he'd have to lie, but not the most upstanding source.

Rondo knew. Well documented that Kennedy calls poor games against Doc Rivers every time after Doc said something similar to him a few years ago. Not a good look. I don't really think less of Rondo as a person (some people are talking about how they'll never respect him again). Things get said in the heat of the moment. It was a stupid thing to say. But I'm not going to extrapolate on it and say that Rondo is some kind of homophobe.

*edit*
It's also not far-fetched to believe that if Kennedy has a vendetta against Rivers, that he has one against Rondo as well, which is probably what set Rondo off. Definitely not excusing what he said, but now I think we all know why Rondo seemed to go off the handle seemingly out of nowhere.

One of the best pieces of advice I got as a kid was "separate the art from the artist" or simply "don't meet your heroes". If you're putting people on a pedestal due to their talent a lone you're setting yourself up for disappointment.

I just listened to Grants opening and Im kinda just shaking my head. If you turned in late and didn't hear that he was talking about Rondo's gay slur, you would have thought a kings player kidanpped a kid or a kings player had just been accused of murder. Cmon with the theatrics man. Maybe I'm just too old school. Ive been called some of the worst names for being hispanic and it just rolls off my back man. You know, that whole sticks and stones can break my bones thing........

I wouldn't be surprised if we have a moment of silence at the next game to atone for Rondo's verbal assault.

I didn't hear Grant's opening and I haven't listened to his show recently. People that think this is just going to blow over are not familiar with the politics in this town. People have have been fired for saying less. The only way this doesn't get really ugly for Rondo is if Kennedy comes put publicly and accepts Rondo's apology which will be VERY public.

Don't kid yourselves, multiple DUI's and using cocaine are treated more objectively than the comment Rondo made.

I don't listen to Napear's show, but I do listen to Bomani Jones', and I found myself compelled by his reasoning; he also seemed surprised that the suspension was only one game.

Oh your so right. Fans are already calling in saying that they are very disappointed in how the kings have reacted to this. I don't know what people expect. Cut Rondo?
Vivek, Vlade, Karl, and Rondo have apologized. What more is there to do? What would make people happy?

This is gonna get so much worse.......

I honestly don't know what happened to that ethic. It is crazy to me the institutionalized crying and whining and "poor me" and "poor him" and "poor them". It has become standard these days to gasp in horror about mean words being said. I can't believe it.

When I grew up, way back in the day... if I told my mom and dad that somebody called me a mean name - one that was TRUE about my appearance or heritage or public speaking ability or a specific athletic choke job,,, or whatever... even if they challenged my manhood and accused me of having non-traditional sexual orientation... or WHATEVER... well they would call the commissioner, that's what they would do. And sue the parents of the mean kid. And go to the newspaper and have the school sued where the mean kids were... and there would be an outrage!!!! oh wait, no - they would say "sticks & stones...." that's right. A wonder I ever made it this far in life.

Oh and by the way if I got caught saying the mean stuff, I ate soap. But still.... jeez what a whiny culture.

Seham reported that a third official, Bennie Adams, outside of hearing distance, "affirmed that Rondo aggressively pursued referee Bill Kennedy and had to be restrained by teammates and escorted off the floor by Sacramento team security."

huh??

I take a big issue with statements like this and including it in the article as it just inflames the situation. Makes it seem like Rondo was charging at him ready to beat him down and was only held back by his teammates. Said a stupid thing in the heat of the moment and he's getting his punishment for something that there's no place for in the NBA. Don't make it seem like Rondo is a raging homophobe who was ready to start swinging at Kennedy when that's not even close to what happened.

Today's 24/7 media. They make money off of generating controversy. A few idiots on twitter complaining about something turns into "People outraged by x" on Huffington Post. That generates clicks. Then more people want to feel important so they start complaining too. Because of the witch-hunts and outrage culture, people at the top are quick to bend over for these complainers because they don't want to get fired/protested. Then they feel more empowered. In the past that person would be whining to their neighbors or friends, who would find the act old and tired. But now they're sending off thousands of tweets about how outraged they are about everything, and the media fuels it. It's also a culture that we've adapted that everyone is a special snowflake that deserves a trophy and that if their feelings are hurt that they have been severely wronged in this world.

BUT I do not agree with you saying that because it's true it makes it ok (if I'm reading what you said right). I think it's quite the opposite. "Fag" is a word a lot of people used with their guy-friends. It doesn't even mean "you're a gay person" anymore. But when you call someone a mother f'ing ****** when you know they're gay (and I think he did know), it implies a whole different meaning. A very hateful meaning. I'm not going there with Rondo because lots of things get said in the heat of the moment, and it's likely him and Kennedy (who is an awful ref) have history.
