One of the most underrated storylines in football remains that Steve Spagunolo, widely regarded as one of the best defensive minds in the league’s history is apparently blacklisted from ever being a head coach again because his one stint as the head coach of the Rams wound up being so disastrous that their management had to turn to Jeff ”7-9” Fisher to return the franchise to a base level of simply not being an embarrassment.

The blocked extra point didn’t matter because at that point Mahomes was a man possessed and wasn’t going to lose. They had to put them away when they had chances and repeatedly squandered them. I’m never going to forget those series of playcalls in the third, mainly after that INT. That was the time, and Kyle Shanahan’d all over himself as he always does in the Super Bowl.
KC already confirmed they would go for 2 if the Niners would had scored a touchdown.

Shanahan wrongly assumed KC would go for the tie if the Niners scored a TD first, but that wouldn't have happened. A third possession wouldn't have happened because KC would have ended the game one way or another on a 2 point conversion.
What allowed the OT was the point after miss.....never would've happened had the line of scrimmage done its job. In a very close game special team mistakes matter - alot. Chiefs did not make any mistakes on special teams all game. Aside from that, Shanahan failing to call a timeout when the 49ers offense had the ball on the Chiefs 8 at 3rd and 4, the 1st OT drive to draw up blitz friendly play certainly was a waste of potential. And not selling out with cover 1 on 4th and 1 was also a coaching mistake. A stop wins the game, so they failed to maximize their chances again. It was the mirror coaching failure on either side of the ball, failing to prepare for the blitz, and failure to enact the blitz. Since neither happened, would never know, but neither were successful plays as they were.

Brandon Aiyuk may be the first chink in the 9ers Armor. Hes hinting on Instagram he may want out.
Sorry but BA leaving would be a disaster. Juwan Jennings is probably already gone, no way the Niners pay 3 receivers. And JJ was one of only 2 Niners players who brought their A-game to the Super Bowl.

Now you have feliciano and Burfer going at it on X. Your right SLAB, the Chiefs own this 49er team.
Idc about Feliciano and Burford’s beef. The entire OLine minus Trent and I guess the center can kick rocks. Arguing who’s worse between Burford and McKivitz is like arguing what’s worse between the 2-week spoiled milk or the 3-week.

Just saw one of my 9er podcasts show a CBS sports video of Kyle saying he just wishes they could have scored in OT so KC wouldn't have had a chance. Yeah, the head coach didn't know the rules either. Thats a fireable offense.
I know that shanny just got an extension but I've seen Jed Dork bend to immense pressure. Right now the national media has been blasting kyle and the 49ers. If the pressure continues to build, Jed may fold and finally rid us of this choker.

The guy is such a winner until it matters. Lol, he’s completely unfireable right now, but until Patrick Mahomes 2.0 walks through the doors (srry, Brock) he’s just going to continue to be the modern day pre-Patty Andy Ried.

Patrick Mahomes is good but the 49ers had them beat TWICE. They left the door open and mahomes walked through. Much like the argument with jimmy g, you know, he didn't matter because of our coach and all the cast around him, I think you could put a second tier coach who doesn't have the loser history of shanny and I think he'd win. This team will still be stacked next year. You give that squad to bellicheck, he won't fold like a lawn chair in high pressure moments. I think its insanity to run it all back with the same coach. This team will not be more talented than it was this past season so why run it all back with the coaches who did not have this team prepared all post season?

But does another coach even give us a chance to lose to the Chiefs? And I don’t fully blame Shanahan for loss one. Jim hits EMan, Sherman remembers how to tackle, we win despite some bad playcalling in there. 2019 was far more on the players.

Once again, very thankful fans have absolutely no say in franchise operations.

Question for you though.

We offer Shanny 1 for 1 HC trade with every team in the NFL. Chiefs say no. Who else does?

Not many. Off the top of my head, Ravens and Chargers. Probably the Texans. There might be a couple more. I know I’d rather have Harbaugh again.

Saw this comparison on twitter, but Shanny is the Jerry Sloan of football. Incredible coach, is going to have one of the best teams in football year in and year out (with a healthy QB), but is running into the MJ buzzsaw (Prime Brady/Prime Mahomes)

Demeco is a Shanny disciple lol. Why would they say no?

And Harbaugh should be the lesson here for 49er fans. We got rid of an incredible coach and had to suffer through the Tomsula and Chip Kelly "experience" until we finally found Shanny.

How did us firing Adelman work out? You just don't fire a great coach, unless he loses the locker room and theres a player revolt.

The Texans say no because he’s their guy that just took a team that was universally regarded as a threat for another top pick to the playoffs. It’s a travesty he didn’t win Coach of the Year. Might he be a flash in the pan .. maybe, but he’s their guy now. Salah is also a disciple and he sure as heck didn’t do what DeMeco did. I’m not advocating to fire him, btw. I just have no faith in him ever winning the big one.

On the topic of Harbaugh, dude also had the choker reputation until he decided to straight up cheat his final season in the NCAA because he knew he was going back to the NFL and thus never gonna be punished for it. Not sure having him improved the Niners chances in that last Super Bowl

It's tough to put that on him though. I look at how the Bills and Ravens (with the MVP btw), have seen the Chiefs ghost over the last 6 years too and just utterly failed. Lamar has had amazing teams too, throughout most of his career, is a 2-time MVP with a great coach... and has failed in the playoffs year after year. Josh Allen hasn't been able to get a team through the Mahomes/Reid buzzsaw either.

A great coach? Not great in my book. Kyle not knowing the OT rules in it of itself should be a fireable offense. He's a good play designer. Horrible in game decision maker.
And harbaugh, when he was hired most fans knew that harbaugh has an expiration date wherever he goes. Its happened at every single one of his stops because he is incredibly coarse. He was butting heads with 49er ownership day 1.

And thats whats so painful. The 49ers had the chiefs TWICE for the big win. They just gacked away a 10 point lead, TWICE. And that not even talking about what Kyle did in atlanta as OC in the SB. In my book, guys not great. But its all moot anyway. Kyles not going anywhere.

Cheifs beat the Niners 18 of 20 times they play. The two games the Niners should have won, they lost anyways. That’s what hurts me the most. I know the Chiefs are better: I know the Chiefs are in their head: I know we’re likely going to lose.

But then we lose very winnable games against this unbeatable juggernaut. It sucks.

So, answer the question.

We offer Shanny 1v1 HC trade with every team in football. Chiefs say no. Who else says no?

If he's not great, then there should be like 10+ HC who are better right? At least?

I said it before, i think any 2nd tier coach could win with the stacked team that kyle had last season. We just need a coach who can actually make in game decisions and doesn't choke when the lights get bright.

Bill Belichick who has 8 rings (6 with the pats) is sitting out there. My how history repeats itself. Shanny had Brady sitting out there unsigned and he let him go to Tampa, where he won another ring. Now bill is out there, washed up like everyone was saying brady was too. And we won't pick him up.
Bill is a horrible GM but one of the best coaches. With all the talent on this team? Hands down the 49ers would be the favorties to WIN the super bowl.
Run it back again with the same guy or take a flyer on a guy who has 8 rings? Its kinda a no brainer in my book. Whats the worst that happens, we don't win? Thats kinda where we are now, right?

I'm riding with Shanahan. Firing a coach for not winning a superbowl is really stupid.

Most coaches don't even sniff the success that Shanahan has had so far. He's coached 7 years and when he's had an average or better QB, he's gone to two championship games and two superbowls.

Lost a superbowl thanks to Jimmy overthrowing Sanders.

Lost a championship game thanks to Tartt dropping an easy pick right off his chest.

Potentially lost a championship game thanks to Purdy getting hurt on the first drive.

Lost a superbowl thanks to a punt going off of a blocker's foot.

Yeah they're excuses but if any one of those single plays are different, the Niners either win the superbowl or take another trip to the superbowl.

Well, you’re thinking is more on the level with the 49ers owner, not mine. He said he would have considered a loss to the lions a successful season. I know shannahans not gonna get fired. IMO it’s gonna be a crying shame this edition of the 49ers isn’t gonna get a ring. History will treat Kyle very harshly.

I think it's a crying shame too but lets say the punt doesn't go off of our player's foot and the Niners win, people would be questioning Reid and why it took him so long to make adjustments to get his offense moving with one of the all time great QBs.

I don't think Kyle will be treated harshly. Marv Levy is looked upon positively and he lost 4 straight SBs. Shanahan would be one of the more successful coaches of this era if he retired today. Arians, Reid, and McVay are the only coaches to win a SB since Shanahan started stacking championship games and SB appearances. At worst he would be 4th on the list in this era because no other coach has been as successful.

So your answer to "who replaces Shanny" is the best coach of all time?

Lol. Kind of proves the point. Coaches absolutely matter, but still not to the extent of all-time greats. Bill didn't look so good the last few years without Brady. Reid didn't win a ring until Mahomes came along. How is Phil viewed if he doesn't coach MJ/Shaq/Kobe?

Let it sink in that we were one defensive stop away from a super bowl with a 2nd year player, 1st year full-time starter, 7th round pick at QB, who far and away is the best QB the 49ers have had since Steve Young. I'll continue to bet Purdy continuing to develop and letting him/Shanny to build something here long-term. We finally have a winning QB/Coach situation, the worst thing to do would be to break that up.

Shanahan is also responsible for drafting and developing the team with the most Pro-Bowlers in the league. Kittle, Deebo, Aiyuk, Warner, Jennings, Greenlaw, Hufanga, Lenoir, Mitchell -- a lot of these guys were taken in later rounds and they've been solid starters or in some cases the best in the league at their position. The 49ers took a lot of heat for the Wishnowsky and Moody picks too and both were key contributors this season. It's not like he's hit on every pick -- that 2022 draft looks pretty bad, aside from nabbing a franchise QB with the last pick -- but drafting well has gotten him in position to compete for a championship every year.

Kyle inherited a team with a 2-14 record and zero future and he's built them into a perennial powerhouse -- 4 trips to the NFC Championship Game and 2 to the Super Bowl in 7 years. Anyone demanding more from Shanahan has lost all perspective on what success in professional sports looks like. No one is entitled to a championship. It sounds like getting all the way to the big game and losing is worse for some people than just being terrible every year. I can't understand that point of view.

We can argue about this forever. What it comes down to is mindset. Some people are ok with just being competitive year in year out. Others like me consider it a huge failure if we can’t win the big game. There’s no right way or wrong way to be a fan, everyone is different. I will admit that I’m old. I grew up watching the 49ers win, win, and win, year in year out. And when they didn’t win it all, from Eddie DeBarrolo all the way down to Felicia at the front desk, the season was considered a huge failure. I have all the SF chronicle front pages with “49ERS WIN” plastered across the front. Attended all the parades. Met all of the hall of famers in Rocklin. The 49ers use to be all about the Super Bowl win at all cost and that’s just not the case anymore. Times change and I’m having a hard time letting what I grew up with go. That’s on me. I’ll continue to watch because I absolutely love this franchise but it’s hard to accept that they may not win another ring for the forseeable future. This season was our best chance. We had the most talent, a better QB, and a down chiefs team, and they still couldn’t get it done. This was the year of “no excuses”. Que sera sera…….
My daughter turns 19 in 3 months and she’s never seen a 49er Super Bowl ceremony. I’d like to experience just one with her.
