Kings free agency, part 3

I was reading an article about this on CBS about Gay's Instagram picture with Josh Smith. It says we have no cap space left. Is it true we have no cap left to spend?

Not sure I want Josh Smith to sign with us, but he did ok for the Rockets.

There's just no room for smith. We don't have any shots open and we have enough non shooters.
  1. Rondo / Collison /McCallum
  2. Mclemore / Belinelli / Anderson
  3. Gay / * Casspi?
  4. WCS / *Smith? / Moreland
  5. DMC / Koufos
We will not be a 3 point shooting team that's for sure but it's still formidable. Yes the 3 point is in vogue right now but it's still a double edge sword imo because if your not hitting and your defense is porous that roster above can wear you down by challenging you at the rim getting buckets on you in transition, punishing you inside the paint and passing over your defense. It could work.

Watching Summer League right now, Troy Daniels may be a good 3pt-specialist to pickup cheap. Dude is a lights out shooter

We don't have much cap space. It all depends on the exact figures, but we're looking at about $2M in space if the cap is up at around $69M, which is a bit higher than originally predicted (but the actual cap has yet to be announced).

We can basically waive David Stockton at will, which could bump us up to about $3M in space. Once we spend that, we can also use the $2.8M Room MLE, but that's separate and can't be combined with our cap space. So bottom line is that we don't know the exact details but we can probably sign two contracts that are around $3M each in the first year. Anything beyond that will have to be either veteran minimum deals or we'd have to sign-and-trade, trade or waive players to make space.

I figured that we are still in 5-7 mil range. 56 befor the koufos signing. He will prob start at the 7 mil range

What do we really have to move that would make much of an impact?

Collison - $5 mil
Ben -$3.1
McCallum - $950k
Moreland - $845k
Stockton - $845k

Collison and Ben will probably both contribute more than anyone else we could sign with their money and are great values at their current salaries.
Only thing I can see us doing to clear cap space is trading DC, and I'm completely against it.

Moving/waiving McCallum/Stockton will barely save us cap space since we will still have cap hold because we don't have all the spots taken (so on both of them that's about a million in savings) and waiving Moreland is a move I'm sure we won't make.

Maybe there are discussions about moving DC, but I like him better than any other player left on the market and is contract is very good- only possible reason to move him is if he is really that unhappy with the Rondo signing but I highly doubt it...

If the 26 mil to start with is accurate, and I think it is, then we have about 2 mil left. However if the cap comes in at 69 mil instead of 67, then we will have around 4 mil left to work with. After reaching the cap, we will also have something called the Room Exception, which is around 2.8 mil. So in theory we could have 4 mil left under the cap, and another 2.8 mil to spend once over the cap.

Still have a few trade exemptions to work with too.

Speaking of defensive wings, The Prince of Cameroon, Luc Richard Mbah A Moute, might be a possibility.
absolutely not... Its well known that not only are his knees bad but he has no desire to actually play the game... If he did try to play with someone its only cause he wants a pay check not because he wants to be a contributor

Trade exemptions will be gone once we officially go under cap to use all that capspace. It's the rule.
No, trade exemptions count against team salary when calculating the cap. We had to (will have to) renounce the trade exemptions to sign Rondo/Belinelli/Koufos.
Are you doing this on purpose? cause I think it's trade "exception" not "exemption"... am I wrong?

The thing that irritated me the most about the Harris reporting was that he "turned down" a max offer from the Kings which is completely out of context. The Magic could always offer more than anyone else or match any offer, so had we actually made an offer it would have been more like him bringing it to Orl to see if they would match. At that point there would be no reason for him to sign the imaginary Kings offer since the Magic made it clear they were matching any offer. The report was spun to try to make the Kings look bad once again.
Was he a RFA? The free agent lists I used already updated and I can't find what his status was.

edit: ah nba.com has it

Yes, he was a RFA. He didn't have the option to turn it down if Magic matched.

Lou Williams, Nick Young and Kobe all fighting for shots?

And people think we're the misfits.
I had the same thought. I actually like Williams and think he is a great value in this market at 3/21, but what the hell are the Lakers doing? They have three of the most shameless black hole chuckers in the league. They aren't going to be able to get Randle enough (any?) touches to develop. They could have drafted Okafor and paired him with Randle, but chose not to and patched their hole at center by absorbing the corpse of Roy Hibbert. They passed on Okafor to draft Russel, who just happens to play the same position as one of their two "coveted" young pieces. That piece, Clarkson, who is so valuable that fans wouldn't trade him for Cousins, is now buried behind Russel, Kobe, Lou, Young, and others in the backcourt. They got flat rejected by Lamarcus Aldridge because their free agent pitch was all about the city of LA, and not basketball. Oh, and they are unlikely to have a draft pick.

And WE are the dysfunctional team...

Per league source, #Spurs have withdrawn qualifying offer to @Cory_Joe making him unrestricted FA

Cory Joseph would have been a much better pickup for the Kings, presuming again that RR wasn’t added to make Rudy/DeMarcus happy.
Well I think Rondo WAS brought in partly to appease Boogie and Rudy but beyond that Rondo is still a more talented player. Now if Joseph can be had for $4 million less then there's an arguement to be made as that caproom could've added another impact player.

I wasn't bullish on the Romdo signing but I'm very happy to see how things play out at this point.
