Joerger building staff

Just doing a cursory Google, it looks as though Gates has a lot in common with Joerger in terms of background, experience, style, etc. I'm not going to have much of a problem if he does come back...I'm still hoping for Doug Christie to be added as a defensive specialist, however.

I'd love Doug as an assistant but I'm guessing Turner will be the lead assistant and "defensive coordinator".

Was wondering when we'd hear more rumblings about the staff. The Joerger hire happened so quicky and then... silence.

Saw a couple days ago that Bzdelik, who was on the bench with Joerger in Memphis, turned down an assistant spot here for "personal reasons" (link).

I remember Bryan Gates was portrayed as a super star minor league coach with a bright future in NBA when we hired him years ago. I do not know why he left Sacramento so soon. People believed he had a HC potential some day somewhere but I think he developed into a players development coach (second or third assistant type) in NBA.

I think he is a solid hire.

A couple weeks ago the afternoon show on KHTK was talking about the reason why the Kings were going to keep Lieberman on as an assistant,
Because they didn't want the bad pub of firing one of the only 2 female assistants in the league. I haven't heard anything else about this. I hope this was just a rumor because it would really suck to bog down our new coach with coaches he doesn't want.

Nancy and Corliss were working out the players in the Kings first pre-draft work outs. The impression I get from Joerger is that he tends to be inclusive and I think both are part of the Kings "Family"

If Joegs doesn't want her as part of his staff, I think we should just demote her instead of firing. It'll look extremely bad on the Kings' part, but I think she's a good coach, but maybe not a fit for Joegs. I wouldn't mind her being a part of our player development and scouting.

Those comments are about as sexist as any I've seen.

She doesn't want a freaking job because of her gender. If she remains on the staff, it will be because she's freaking good at her job.

Nancy and Corliss are Pro's. Both were good players in their own right. Corliss won sixth man of the year and a championship. Nancy still holds records at Old Dominion where she won championships and the nickname "Lady Magic". Both also have years of coaching experience. They are basketball people and that is what the Kings need. Since Corliss was with the Kings prior to Karl and Nancy was at odds with Karl I see no reason why they would not stay in Sacramento.

I don't see any issue with leaving Corliss and Nancy on the team if Joerger feels they deserve it. He is the man in charge now and I feel those two have showed that they belong in someway, just because you bring in a new head coach does not always mean you have to revamp the entire coaching staff. There are always some gems that can be found under a rock somewhere ;)

I agree with your thoughts but I do hope that Joerger's approval and whole hearted support is solicited and obtained.
Remember that Nancy/Vivek's personal friendship was cited as a problem in the past. That can be an unhealthy thing for the coach and his subordinate, professional or not.

I think we need to get over the fact that they are still here for a reason, I don't want to assume that Nancy is sticking around just because she is a woman and rather she is around because the players support her and she knows a little bit about basketball. This drawing straws from the air action hasn't gotten us anywhere. Vivek has stepped aside, so it seems and has allowed Vlade to do his own thing. Joerger in the mean time has his own choice of assistants to put beside him and if that so happens to be Corliss and Nancy, then it's his own doing, not anyone else.

I agree. But you know our favorite reporter Aileen speculated that Vivek forced Vlade to abandon his deliberate coaching search and grab Joerger because he was the one most likely to let DeMarcus stay fat and mean to reporters who look like Howard Stern. So... if Aileen is right, Vivek hasn't stepped back. But come on... that was the craziest zaniest off the wall take from Aileen among many so... yeah I am very very happy with Vivek Ranadive now. He seems like a smart smart guy who is always learning. Hasn't been any wackiness from him in a long time since really the pic with the R2D2 security robots.

So you agree with me that it has to be Joerger's decision?

On April, 28th it was announced, that Grizzlies allowed Kings to interview Elston Turner. I assume, the request came couple of days before, which leads me to believe, that Vlade started looking into hiring Joerger at least on April, 25th. Two biggest outliers in Kings' search are Elston Turner, lead assistant for Grizzlies' head coach Dave Joerger, and Henry Bibby, assistant coach/offensive coordinator for Grizzlies' head coach Lionel Hollins next to lead assistant Dave Joerger and then assistant coach for Grizzlies' head coach Dave Joerger. Neither was invited with any intention to discuss their candidacy for Kings' head coaching job. It was a simple information gathering, although Turner did get a job out of that.

Only by George Karl. If Joerger hadn't wanted Corliss and Nancy to stay, it would have been easy. Vlade actually said at the first Joerger press conference that ALL assistant coaches had been released. It is widely believed that Joerger spoke to Vlade and clarified that he actually wanted to keep Corliss and Nancy.

Another connection that I didn't know about until I saw Rondo on NBA TV talking about who his mentors were when he was young. One of them, and it's someone that he says he talks to everyday, is Henry Bibby. That might be another reason for Vlade bringing him in for an interview, along with Bibby's connection to Joerger

I just hope that if she remains on the staff it's because Joerger wants her, not because she is being forced upon him by management. Joerger should be able to determine his entire assistant coaching staff, top to bottom. It wouldn't be the first time a good assistant has gotten fired because of a new HC. Let's not have a double standard - if it's good enough for the men assistant coaches to be fired with a new HC it's good enough for the women.
