Hornets forward Jeffery Taylor was suspended 24 games without pay when he pled guilty to a domestic violence charge in October 2014.

That is the precedent here for DC.

In any case when more info comes out we'll be enlightened. This obviously gives Rondo more leverage in terms of us needing to sign a starting PG if a (likely) suspension is coming for DC.

No, that isn't the "precedent" here for DC. See the comment from the Kings above.

WOW! DC is the last person I expected to get in trouble with the law. We don't know all the details so should refrain from making any outlandish comment.

From a team perspective, not a great way to start the off-season. Might seriously affect our plans going forward.

Arg! Why! Now the season will start with DC serving a long suspension. I guess re-signing Rondo or someone to start at PG is just plain critical.

Lets wait a little. It might be another "Varlamov case" or, unfortunately, smth truly serious. Whatever it is, it will definitely affect the Kings and our offseason plans negatively. Bad day for the team.

Shocked and disappointed like everyone else. The initial signs aren't promising but I'm interested to see what news comes out. I hope his wife is recovering well if any injuries were sustained.

Domestic violence situations are nasty. And as someone posted above, it's hard to compare one to another - each one has their own inner dynamics. I will absolutely hold my judgement until the facts of the case come forward. There are three sides to a story.

There are two sections that can be used in domestic violence crimes: The felony section - 273.5(a) or the misdemeanor section - 243(e)(1). If a injury is visible, no matter how slight (from slight redness to full-on lacerations/bruises/etc), the felony section is applied. If an accusation is made and there are no visible injuries, the misdemeanor section is used. One thing to note, is that in domestic violence accusations, the 836PC section states the officer SHALL make an arrest in these circumstances. It's one of the only sections that mandates an officer make an arrest when it is warranted.

I know I read earlier in this thread about the Bruce Miller case. If I remember correctly, he was charged with the misdemeanor section for domestic violence.

EDIT:

I thought I would add this last piece, as I have investigated several domestic violence cases. There have been times that it was a he-said, she-said type of case, with little to no unbiased, supporting facts -- and I did my best to find the aggressor in each case and make an arrest. This was done knowing full-well that the case was very weak and would probably be dropped by the DA's office.

The Taylor suspension was from the league, not the team, but:

The 24-game penalty for Taylor does not represent a new league standard for domestic violence cases, sources told Stein. The league plan going forward, sources said, is to deal with any such incidents on a case-by-case basis.

Artest was suspended for seven games in 2007, FWIW.

This was the last thing I expected to see tonight. Stunned.

If he did what he is accused of, then he will have to pay the price in some way shape or form. Curious to see what happens next and what the facts are, but it's definitely not going to play out in his favor.

My thought? This isn't TMC. We have no idea what actually happened. I would really ask everyone to err on the side of caution. So far, I'm very proud of our board for not acting like so many of the jerks on Twitter. Just use common sense, please, and remember he is innocent until proven guilty. Being arrested isn't the same as being convicted.

Having said that, it's within board parameters to discuss the potential this might have on the team, possible suspensions, etc.
I in general agree and I would would caution anyone not to rush to judgment.I will add however that the real world does not and should not demand the level of proof that a court of law does. Just as an example there came a point in the Ray Rice case that I and most people were very comfortable with calling his behaviors unacceptable and that they should not be tolerated by the league. His guilt or innocence in court was at that point academic to the leagues responsibility to do the right thing.

well no two cases are the same but that is the last domestic violence suspension handed down by the league if DC's case breaks that way.
I wasn't talking about what the league might do. I'm talking about what THE KINGS might do. If you read their statement, I think there's reason to believe that if this is true he might be released from the team.

The Kings' statement was pretty boilerplate generic. I myself wouldn't try to read anything into it other than "Poopity poopity poop! No comment! (Just don't say anything stupid...) NO COMMENT!"

Does he still count against the cap? Any CBA gurus out there?

The Taylor suspension was from the league, not the team, but:

will be interesting. I dont see it being anything less than 24 games - IF, DC pleads guilty/is found guilty.

24 was considered rough back when Taylor had it handed down by the league but again if guilty you could argue that is a light suspension. I feel DC will have the book thrown at him.

OK, so here's the skinny on salary cap stuff.

A player convicted of a violent felony (this would appear to apply, if convicted) faces a minimum 10-game suspension. While a player is suspended, they are not paid their salary. Although the team does not pay that salary, the value does not come off the salary cap. However, half of the money not paid due to suspension comes out of luxury tax calculations.

Any player (whether in legal trouble or not) may be waived. If Collison were to be waived before August 31, the one year on his contract would be stretched over three seasons as far as salary cap hit goes. However, there may not be any finality in this case before August 31st.

The CBA does have a clause regarding personal conduct that can allegedly be used to void a contract, in which case it would not be paid and would come completely off of the salary cap. However, it has never been successfully enforced due to opposition from the players' union. For example, the Warriors tried to void Sprewell's contract after he choked Carlesimo under this clause, and were denied.

I'm not sure they would go down that road though of releasing him. Ive read their statement and it seems fairly stock standard. In any case they as well as the league wont be able to act until this goes forward before the court/judgement is passed.

if he is guilty and we need the cap space then this works in our favour - hate saying that because there should be no one who benefits from horrendous domestic violence crimes.

Flip side and again i hate saying this but for what we are paying him i dont think we could do any better in landing a borderline starting PG/2nd tier PG so whilst i wouldn't want to keep him if found guilty there may be a business case here especially if we let Rondo walk and decide to spend the money elsewhere.

This is quite a fork in the road. We need the facts of the case to be verified and established.

You can't just release your old team every summer to go out and chase max free agents. ;) See Cap's note.

Its also why that's a very rare step largely made just to make a statement. Given Darren's stature and lack of earlier problems, it would have to be a pretty ugly fact pattern for us to shoot ourselves in the foot over it.

Yes the players association will fight tooth and nail here as they did when Taylor was suspended.

If the injuries are grave and as documented graphic however i dont think even they will be able to fight a void of contract.

I haven't heard any rumors about the severity of the injuries. Given that Latrell literally choked his coach and the players' union successfully fought an attempted voiding of his contract the injuries would probably have to be very severe for there to be a real chance of Collison's contract being voided.

true but coach and partner/girlfriend are very two different kettle of fish here.

If graphic and severe then this will play out in the media and post ray rice i don't think the players union will stand a chance/want to be seen to be fighting this
