First Event at Golden 1 Center

Oh, and God have mercy on some innocent souls if the first event happens to be a Taylor Swift concert. I might find my grave a lot earlier than anticipated if that were the case.

Voisin's article sums up why I've always defended building entertainment centers. There is something for everyone. She talked about certain concerts that her nieces and nephews would want to see. Mentioned Bocelli for the older folks. You have monster truck shows for truckers and hard hat construction workers. Disney on ice for the youngsters. There's something for everyone. Otherwise, just about every major city in America wouldn't already have downtown arenas. Saving the Kings is just icing on the cake.

A Kings game. Not preseason, though. I think the Kings should play their preseason home games at Sleep Train Arena next year, and make the regular season home opener the first event, and first Kings game, in the Golden 1 Center.
I agree with this. The Magic and Nets played their pre season games at their new arenas and to me, that takes the luster off of opening night. Use the opening month of the arena to host other events and get all the kinks out. By the time they host 5 or 6 events, the arena staff will be able to learn from various mistakes and what not so that when they have an actual King game, things will go smoothly.

Why would you agree with me, only to then suggest they host 5 or 6 events during the "opening month" of the arena, when I had said, in my comment, that the Kings regular season home opener should be the first event in the Golden 1 Center? I am confused...

I'll clarify. I agreed that the Kings shouldn't play any pre season games at the new arena. Having their first ever game at the new arena as a regular season game would be great.

As for what should be the first event overall, you don't want it to be a Kings game. In fact, of all the most recent arenas, I don't think any of them had an NBA game as it's first event. Barclays Center had a Jay Z concert and Staples Center had a Bruce Springsteen concert. I think Orlando had a spanish singer if I'm not mistaken. Maybe Vicente Fernandez IIRC.

The problem is that there are so many odds and ends to running a brand new arena that you're bound to make mistakes. Having an event that's not on the national stage helps you ease through the process, figure out what went right and wrong and then make sure you correct them before the NBA opener.

Maybe a Urijah Faber fight would work. I know that Mike gave him a crown downtown shirt while the Seattle process was playing out...

I see your point, and while I don't disagree with your reasoning, I won't agree with it either. Just for this one instance, though. A big part of why this arena is going up as we speak, as we all know, has been the effort put forth by those associated with the Sacramento Kings in their quest to keep the team from relocating. Face it, if the Kings were in Seattle, Golden 1 Center WOULD NOT be going up right now. This alone, in my humble opinion, qualifies the Sacramento Kings' home opener next season to be the first event hosted at the Golden 1 Center.

Does anyone know if other teams who moved into new arenas did the same (no preseason games in the new digs)? I imagine the players might want to adjust to their new surroundings.

Personally, it's not a huge deal. The first regular season game there will be a major event no matter what.

Yeah but that's the case with most arenas. While they have all types of events, it's the presence and effort of those associated with the local NHL or NBA team that is the MAIN reason for it's existence. I emphasize MAIN because I'm a big supporter of indoor arenas because of all the various events that can go on inside whereas baseball and football stadiums are mostly just for baseball and football. That is exactly what happened in Sacramento and was the basis for KJ and the "bigger than basketball" slogan. It minimizes the anti sports people and their arguments.

At the end of the day, you're right in that the presence of the Kings is why this is happening. But getting back to my original point, this is the situation in most places. Despite all the events, the NHL and NBA team is why the building goes up. Despite that, most arenas open with other acts for the reasons I mentioned earlier in the thread. Too many things can go wrong in the early stages of a new building so it's usually a good idea to have a few other events before the regular season opener.

The Lakers played their pre season games at the Forum and then had their first game at Staples be their home opener. Although this worked for them because the Clippers and Kings already played games at the arena so it gave the staff time to get the kinks out. The Sacramento Kings don't have the luxury of having other teams breaking in their arena though.

I know that Washington, Miami and Toronto didn't finish their arena until the regular season started so none of them had the option to play pre season games at their respective arenas.

Wikipedia is good source for this as well. If you search any arena, most of their wikipedia pages tell you what the first ever event at the facility was.

I seriously doubt that they would play the preseason games at sleep train. They need to have a bit of a cold opening to work out the kinks and bugs. Not only for the arena employees and the business but for Kings fans as well. Remember parking will be a nightmare initially until people get it all figured out. A soft opening will help to provide for a smooth transition on opening night which is much more important than any preseason game problems.

If only.

Nope apparently it's Maroon 5. I shouldn't let that bother me but wow if I was listing 100 music acts I'd like to see open the arena, they would probably not be on it. Would just as soon it be Anjali World.

That is the first announced act - nowhere have I seen that it will indeed be the first concert at the new facility.

You might want to check out Coachella this year, as they are the headlining act!
Yeah, I actually considered going. But if I'm going to fork over $399 per person for my stepson and I to go see them, I need to know that I'm going to be somewhere close to the stage. With 99,000 people attending the festival over a 3 day period, all we'd likely end up doing is watching the jumbo screen. Didn't want to do that. My stepson is nearly 21 yo and would have loved to see many of the groups on the bill, however, I only wanted to see GN'R -- and wouldn't have minded seeing Ice Cube -- but couldn't care less about all the rest of the hoopla. Also, it's likely to be 105 degrees that time of year!

I decided to hold out and hope that they do a few warm up gigs prior to Coachella and/or tour afterward.

I heard a rumor that they might be one of the very first acts to play the new Las Vegas Arena when it opens in late April, early May. If that happens, I'd be much more at ease spending several hundred dollars on guaranteed seats in a much more intimate environment. Still want to see their very first show since July 1993.

While they are rumored to be playing stadiums after Coachella, the Vegas Arena rumor got me thinking about our new place and the possibility of them being one of the 1st to play there. It's a pipedream, I'm sure, but some bands like being the first (or last) to play a venue. I'm crossing my fingers that whomever is in charge of booking is at least trying to reach out to them to see if they'd be interested in christening Golden1.

They may not be everyone's cup of tea, but they are a historic rock band whose core members are playing together for the 1st time in 23 years. And they originated from our own State. :)

Is there anyone on the board that knows when the 2016-2017 nba season will start?

I'm planning a 3-week trip of the west-coast, visiting several national parks, and finishing my trip with a couple of days in San Francisco. My biggest wish of course is to be there when we open the new arena. I'm flying some 5445 miles, so it would be such a shame if I'd miss the opening it by a week.

After looking at the nba start dates of the previous seasons (2000-2015), it seems to start the last tuesday of october, with exception of 2004 and 2005.

2015: Tuesday October 27
2014: Tuesday October 28
2013: Tuesday October 29
2012: Tuesday October 30
2010: Tuesday October 26
2009: Tuesday October 27
2008: Tuesday October 28
2007: Tuesday October 30
2006: Tuesday October 31
2005: Tuesday November 1
2004: Tuesday November 2
2003: Tuesday October 28
2002: Tuesday October 29
2001: Tuesday October 30
2000: Tuesday October 31

Your best bet might be to contact the Kings PR folk. At the least, it couldn't hurt.

Just heard on SiriusXM that Izzy is going to have some type of role in the reunion. To me it is much more exciting if Izzy is on board. GNR would make a killer headliner for the G1C opening rock show
That will be awesome if it happens. I've been reading rumors the past few days that Izzy and Steven Adler will both be involved in some manner. The Adler rumor seems to have some validity to it because he has been very vocal about wanting to be involved -- to the point of possibly throwing a fit if he is not -- and he has been absolutely silent for weeks. Also, his band "Adler's Appetite" is conveniently scheduled to play in the LA area in early April, just prior the GN'R shows in Vegas. Make of that what you will. As for Izzy, he's always been a recluse and doesn't like touring much. It makes sense that they wouldn't announce him being part of it because he'll probably want the freedom to pop in and out as he pleases. That's how I see it going down anyway.

I was lucky enough to secure 2 tickets to the 1st show in the new Vegas Arena on April 8th. But I'd love to see them come to our new Arena in October as well. And, to your point, if the reunion or rebranding or whatever it ends up being involves Izzy and/or Steven, along with the other 3, it would be hard to find a better opening act for the new arena, I just hope Maroon 5's currently scheduled gig isn't the first .....
