Never really gave a crap about NFL but I must say seeing Aussie/Samoan Jarred "Plane"Hayne (reigning Rugby League MVP) light it up in his first preseason game for the 49ers got me a tiny bit interested. Loved watching the dude play Rugby League and for his first game ever pretty surprising what he did even if it were against lesser opposition than what you would see in a regular season game. There are some dynamic athletes in rugby league right now and the physicality in RL is far greater than NFL.

I wish Jonah Lomu would have given NFL a shot dude was the biggest freak athlete in Rugby Union history one team offered him a deal but he turned it down to keep playing Union and than dudes kidneys failed him and he had to retire. I was actually fortunate enough to meet him as a kid.

Standing at 6ft 5, weighing a whopping 120 kg and running 10.8 seconds (100m) makes him an once in a lifetime athlete.

Hayne plane at it again, I read somewhere the 49ers are actually really impressed with his ability to tackle as well that he will probably be a lock for there special teams.

NOTE: I split the discussion of rugby and rugby players into its own thread.

I don't think I've ever been so discouraged as a 49er fan. Ahmad Brooks? ... sigh ... :(

As a Niner fan, it makes me feel good to see the Raiders continue doing Raider things. Also, as I find the Cowboys annoying as all get-out (or maybe just many of their fans), I was sad to see the Giants blow the game at the end. Just run down the clock on third down and kick the FG. Argh. Glad Seattle lost, though.

And no, I don't expect anything from the Niners this year. They will pleasantly surprise me if they go 0.500.

As one of potentially only a few Cowboys fans on this board, I am glad that the Boys of Big D were able to pull it off in the end. Not having Dez for a few weeks is gonna suck, though.

I've watched enough and I've also seen enough data that I trust that over a fan's memory. I understand if you don't like the ups and downs of a clutch quarterback (as all clutch quarterbacks also have stinky performances when it matters), especially one with heartbreaking losses like Romo, but it seems pretty clear according to the evidence he is actually very good overall when it matters.

I never said he is a bad quarterback; he actually is a very good quarterback. What I said was, however, that I do not believe in the guy. He is a darn good quarterback if you want your team to get to the post season. He hasn't shown me enough to declare that I believe he can take us to the Super Bowl. That is what I am saying.

Basically, all I am saying here is.......Tony Romo is a good quarterback; Tony Romo is not a great quarterback.

Yeah, well, not a bad start huh? :)

Plenty of concerns, of course, and I'm not sure Minnesota is that great, but it sure seems like the defense might still be good and I love what Hyde was able to do consistently getting big gains.
Not to downplay last night's performance or anything, but as uolj mentioned, Minnesota is not that great. The Niners went out and did exactly what they were supposed to do, and that was to take care of a crappy team. Let's see how well they fare against the real competition.

I quit reading after the word "but"... Sorry, Cowboys fan, but I learned eons ago not to pay any attention to anything said with that kind of passive/aggressive disclaimer. You sound way too much like Laker fan IMHO.

I am a Niners fan. I will celebrate every single win just as I have for a very long time. I'll be blunt - I don't care what a fan of another team thinks and, because you're new here, I'll give you fair warning. I care about the Niners almost as much as I care about the Kings. :p

I'm sorry if I came across as a jerk. That was not my intention at all. My point was that the Vikings are not a good team, and I, personally, don't like to get too excited about beating a sub par team. I say that about the Cowboys all the time. And, honestly, I will say the same about the Kings when the time comes.

I'm sorry, but I, personally, can't get too excited about any of my teams beating those teams they're supposed to beat.

You can enjoy your win as much as you like. I ain't stopping ya. I was just stating my opinion.

Despite what you think, 99% of people would agree the 49ers weren't "supposed" to beat the Vikings.

When did the Vikings become a team they weren't supposed to beat?

When the Niners became the team that wasn't supposed to really beat anyone. Did you catch any of them in preseason? Horrible!

Going into the game, for the Vikings the return of AP was huge. Supposedly good defense. Good young QB.

No way in hell were the Niners a shoe in to beat the Vikings...... Not even saying that the Vikings were "supposed" to beat the Niners. IMO it was a toss up at the least.

People make too much out of preseason...you can't evaluate a team in the preseason. Preseason is to evaluate your teams depth.

Lol Just stop. Preseason isn't even the main reason at all.
You stated that the 49ers were horrible in the preseason which lead up to your assumption that they wouldn't be able to beat a Minnesota Vikings team that hasn't had Peterson play in one season and playing a second year QB who can't even throw the ball with no receivers to speak of. Where am I wrong here?

Vikings were favored by 2.5 points or so. Doesn't matter why, they were favored.

Now, if 49ers fans want to hold out hope that the team is good and can make the playoffs, then yes, they should be able to beat the Vikings at home. But the general expectation is that the 49ers are not a playoff team. Therefore, the win was "something to be excited about".

However, there's also the seemingly minor but apparently important point that some fans like to celebrate any and every win. So, yeah, a pretty decisive win against a team favored to beat you is probably worth some red font and a smiley face. ;)
