Since five teams, including our Kings, are having their media day today, might as well consider this the "official" start to the preseason. I hereby declare TDOS to be over.

So mote it be.

And here's something that's always bugged me: how come, whenever someone wants to point out that basketball was invented "by a Canadian," those same people rarely if ever acknowledge that said Canadian was living and working in the United States at the time? Basketball wasn't invented in Canada; it's an inherently American sport. Why is it that, when people say basketball was invented in the U.S., people feel compelled to comeback with "by a Canadian," as if the second point makes the first point not true?

Furthermore than that, Doctor Naismith, while born in Ontario, lived nearly two-thirds of his life in the United States, and spent the last fourteen years of his life as an American citizen.

1. Media Day does not, IMHO, signal the end of TDOS.
2. I don't know these people to whom you refer who are always touting that Naismith was Canadian.

Just sayin'... :)

It typically comes up in conversations during international basketball tournaments. Most commonly by people who feel that it's their responsibility to seek out anyone whom they decide is too vocally pro-USA, and "take them down a peg."

When I read things like that, I'm even more glad that I refrain from exploring other sports-related forums. KF and PacersDigest are the only ones I need. :)

I've even been to the basketball HOF, and don't recall any overt mention there of him being Canadian. I'm sure it's there on a plaque somewhere, but it's not really highlighted that is for sure.

BTW, if anyone is planning a trip there, and that is your main reason for the trip, don't waste your time. It's really quite terrible. It's a giant dome like an arena, there is basketball court right in the middle and three levels of stuff to look at. A ton of boring memorabilia in cases and pictures of all the people way up above you are in the HOF. I literally could only find one thing from the Kings there, it was a layout of Pete Carrills princeton offense on a white board.

I asked one of the guards there why there was no Kings stuff there, and he said the only way they get items is if they are donated by the teams themselves. So not surprising, the Maloofs and previous ownership never sent crap to Springfield.

The only cool thing was that you could play on the court there. They had 6 total hoops + a 7 foot, 8 foot an 9 foot hoop for kids to dunk on. I guess they sell memberships to play basketball there for like $30 a month like you would at 24hr fitness. I found that very odd, some guys were showing up for a lunch time game and we wrapped up our court time.

Let me just say this: Austin Carr isn't the best color man in the NBA; I'd struggle even putting him in the top half. But, there's no color commentator doing games for the NBA today who sounds like he enjoys his job as much as Austin Carr.

The Denver Nuggets are now investing over 100 million dollars combined in the contracts of Kenneth Faried and Javale McGee. While both players are useful, neither (nor both of them put together) are probably worth that much money and locking yourself into that frontcourt for at least the next two seasons (along with a healthy dose of Mozgov and JJ Hickson... and they also have Darrell Arthur for some reason ) pretty much mires them in slightly-above-mediocrity unless Gallinari suddenly took that next step and became Dirk Nowitzki while he was rehabbing.

As Woz reports:
Denver Nuggets forward Kenneth Faried has reached agreement on a five-year, $60 million contract extension, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

...

The deal includes a partial guarantee in the fifth year that assures Faried he will make no less than $52 million over the life of the contract, sources said.

I love Austin Carr he brings something different, I agree he's not the most talented color man but I think he gets the job down and is fun to listen to.

As expected, Faried got paid. I'm sure his FIBA tourney had a lot to do with it but 60 million for a hustling PF with no offensive game? Hmmm...to each his own. Regarding the color analysts, I'm quite fond of Ian Eagle, he sounds very engaged when he is commentating games.

Wow...watching the Lakers game is boring and brutal. At least the Wizards and Bulls got into another scuffle today :)
Yeap I think the Wizards vs Bulls with both fully healthy could be the best rivalry in the NBA this season, in particular now that Pierce is added to the already potent mix.

Pierce's veteran presence alone will do wonders for the youngesters such as Wall, Beal and Porter. That's the foundation of the team right there so what better way to get them a proper vet talking to them in their ear, plus having championship experience always is a plus.

Catching up on preseason games (one of the few perks of having to pay an inordinate amount of money to legally watch games overseas) and here are my (completely unimportant) thoughts:

Boston v. Philly

Nerlens Noel is still really really raw and not in "Look at that young buck! Just wait til his mind catches up with his body!" sense of the word that made everyone fawn over Giannis. He was slow to react, unable to establish position on both ends of the court, still not bulky enough to muscled up inside, and looked generally useless on defense. His final stat line: 26 minutes, 4 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block, 4 turnovers, 6 fouls.

More impressive to me (at least in relation to Noel) was Marcus Smart, who played very good defense at times at the start of the game (that backcourt pairing with Bradley has potential to simply shutdown the wings). That said, his offense is as untenable as everyone said, with him going 0-8 overall and 0-5 from three point land. That said, he still showed good court awareness. But what the hell was Bradley doing taking so many shots? The dude's apparently been spending too much time at practice with Marcus Thornton. Marcus Smart final stats: 27 minutes, 2 points, 3 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals, 1 block, 2 turnovers, 4 fouls.

Elsewhere, I'd like to nominate the Lakers as a potential dark horse for least exciting team in the NBA. When Robert Sacre is your backup plan at center, things aren't going all that awesomely. The roster is now literally a bunch of dudes who were good three or four years ago with Randle as their one player who'll probably be on their roster in two years. Even if Kobe does have it in him to have another superstar season, I don't see how these guys even get past the first round in the playoffs max. Ed Davis did look alright, even if he made Carl Landry look like a great rebounder in comparison. Ed Davis stat line: 12 minutes, 12 points, 1 rebound, 4 blocks, 3 fouls, 3 turnovers.

Durant with the stress fracture in his foot that'll cost him around ten weeks. Maybe sitting out of FIBA didn't make much of a difference after all
