ESPN reporting Casspi to sign one-year deal (updated title)

#61
Casspi was good enough to play 18 minutes per game off the bench for one of the better teams in the league. He's an NBA player, and he cost nothing.

I'm not going to get up in arms over this one. We'll see what happens next, if anything, but this is a reserve player who may or may not play at all, period, or he may play in the role Williams played in last season if he is traded, and I'm OK with that.

I actually think this could be a precursor to a Williams deal. He's our most moveable piece that we theoretically don't want.

Expiring deal, still could fool a team with his potential, young, etc.

So on Hoopshype it showed Pelicans had a one year salary $1,063,000 as a team option?
I guess Rockets excercised the option before they traded him to Pelicans?

If we put a claim for him off waivers we have to pay his salary for this coming year, so we have the 1 mil payroll hit
I think we can do so since we have a TPE we can use?
So unless a team with cap space that had a worse record than us makes a claim we would get him
Would we have to wait the full 48 hrs before we know if we have him?

Sorry not really sure how this claim off waivers works

Yes, Houston exercised the team option and traded him to New Orleans. The Pelicans waived him.
Waivers are a temporary status for players who are released by their team. A team initiates the waiver process by "requesting waivers" on the player they are releasing. The player stays "on waivers" for 48 hours (including weekends and holidays), during which time other teams may claim the player and assume his contract. If no team has claimed the player before the end of the waiver period (which is always 5:00 PM Eastern Time), he "clears waivers." The player's contract is terminated and he becomes a free agent.

A team can claim a player on waivers only if one of the following is true:

  • The team is far enough under the salary cap to fit the player's entire salary.
  • The team has a Disabled Player exception for at least the player's salary (see question number 25), and the player is on the last season of his contract.
  • The team has a trade exception for at least the player's salary (see question number 85).
  • The player has a minimum salary contract.
http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q65

If a team makes a successful waiver claim, it acquires the player and his existing contract, and pays the remainder of his salary -- the waiving team is relieved of all responsibility for the player. There is a fee of $1,000, payable to the league office, for claiming a player on waivers. If more than one team tries to claim a player on waivers, the team with the worst record gets him.

So we have to wait until 2:00 Friday afternoon to see if Kings put the only claim in , If they do it

And pour Quincy Acy now has to sweat out Omri and Moreland to see if he gets waived on Sat

That extra Mil would really mean only one of the two would get signed,

Well, if Marc Stein reported it, it's probably not happening.

NBA Reporters who break Kings news accuracy ranking:
1. Woj (arena news excluded)
2. Marc Spears
3. Jason Jones (But only because, by the time he reports it, the news is old hat)
...
...
10. Ailene Voison (occasionally good for news but sometimes prone to giving in to her crushes on players and their rippling biceps)
11. Marc Stein
...
...
181. Chad Ford
...
203. A cucumber.
204. Sam Amico
Amick should be #1

Actually, Amick, Stein and Woj rarely report incorrect info. They are the only three I trust.

This is where there's often a huge discontent with fans. It's simply not that easy to make a trade, especially with guys who's value going into the year are so low. We very likely will need to hang on to Landry this season and hope he is his GSW self. 2 years of GSW Landry is much easier for teams to swallow than 3 years of coming off an injury Landry.

And Casspi isn't repetitive at all. If anything, Acy is the repetitive talent when Reggie Evans does Quincy Acy a lot better than Quincy Acy does. And the fact we just seemingly found the perfect 5th big in Moreland to spend a year developing only puts a clock on Acy.

Casspi is a much better fit around Gay and Cousins. He's comfortable spot-up shooting, he's a better defender than D-Will and Outlaw and most importantly, he's a guy who can contribute on the floor when he's not getting shots. Our floor spacing is going to be very key to our success this season.

I still don't understand the hate towards Casspi here. I always liked him and I hated the Hickson trade. In fact, that's the trade that is blocking the Kings from making major moves still to this day.

Anyways, Casspi will play hard, can shoot the three, will pass and play team ball in the right environment. The Maloof Kings were not the right environment. Casspi has had bad coaches in many places that he's gone. Westphal, McHale and Scott have been his coaches. Out of those three, Byron is probably the best and his resume is very uneven. His game and mentality seems like he'd be good under Malone. His main problem is consistency.

Since it seems the move may be unrelated to keeping Acy then I don't see an issue with giving Casspi a run as a backup player.

Puke. He can stay far and away from this team, please and thank you. If we are staying pat for this summer then we might as well stay pat until the deadline, I'm fine with that.

I don't think we are going to keep Acy. Malone didn't seem too enthused at the fact that he can shoot the 3 ball. And it's a numbers game at this point. I fully expect DWill to be moved before the season leaving a void behind Rudy. And we have Cousins, Evans, Thompson, and Landry right now, plus I expect them to sign Moreland. We need all the shooters we can get at this point, and with the Rockets, Casspi was a hustler, he was crashing the boards and being a pesky/annoying defender. I think, for the vet min, he would be a good pick up. He is wayyyy better than Outlaw, Casspi was a rotation player on a playoff team, Outlaw probably wouldn't be in the league if it weren't for Petrie.

Because Casspi is on any minimum salary, any team can claim him.

If multiple teams submit claims, he’ll go to the one with the worst record last season. The Kings rank seventh in that pecking order – behind the Bucks, 76ers, Magic, Jazz, Celtics and Lakers.

Casspi would remain on the same contract, which doesn’t become guaranteed until Aug. 6. A team that claims him still couldn’t trade him before that date, but it could hold his rights while determining whether or not to keep him. There’s little risk in submitting a claim at this time of year. Casspi could always be waived yet again in the next two weeks.

If the Kings nab Casspi – who began his NBA career in Sacramento – they’d likely waive Quincy Acy, whose contract becomes guaranteed Saturday. They could claim Casspi without waiving Acy, though that would take them over the luxury-tax line. Tax payments aren’t determined until the regular season ends, but why be put in the position of losing revenue-sharing payments when you can just drop Acy at no cost now?

So we could always waive him again by Aug 6th by holding his rights?
Or could be part of a trade after Aug 6th
Or keep him as a backup SF

Lots of Options I guess

I still haven't seen any reason why a Casspi acquisition requires an Acy exit. Roster can be over 15 for the summer (and we're not there yet), and it doesn't matter if you're over the luxury tax line until the end of the season.

Fwiw, the deal seems to be get casspi, drop acy. Per the grant napear show. Take that for what it is.

For the vet min Casspi seems a good bargain. At least we know what position he plays.

Acy is completely redundant. He really has no spot on the team, and Moreland blew him out of the water in summer league.

Dwill at his salary or casspi, I'm taking casspi. Dwill doesn't play like anything more than the vet min anyway.

I don't think Acy has a long term spot on the team but I suspect he may stick around until we clear out everyone else. There's a lot of guys that don't want to be in Sac and won't be in Sac, Acy probably would like to stay in Sac, so my guess is we'll hang onto him a little while longer.

Yep. JT. Considering u can move D-Will to PF and Rudy to small-ball PF, we potentially have 5 guys who can run at that position. And Casspi has some experience there, getting minutes at PF last season too. At least he would do his job as a small-ball PF though and would get space for Cuz in the post.

Biggest problem with D-will is you can't point to any one thing that makes him valuable on the floor. Not a good defender, only rebounds when he wants to, not a good shooter, can't create for others. He CAN do everything, but he's not really good or even average at any of them.

I know there is value in the expiring DWill contract to possibly facilitate a trade bringing back a more important player but I'd be down with trading him for a 2 nd rounder....just not sure anyone would want him for that without us taking back some salary. Would love to drop DWill, keep Acy, pick up Casspi and Moreland. Casspi can help in that stretch 4 position like he did with Houston.

Would rather we sign Josh Howard to the vet minimum. He can still defend and contribute. He’s the kind of vet that would immediately make a difference in the locker room, hes made mistakes, owned up to them and would be a great team, preaching defence, character guy.

The Kings need players better than Omri Casspi. Nothing against him personally but we need much better talent on the roster - not more basically mediocre types. Next we'll hear that Cisco Garcia wants to come back to Kings - not!
I'd welcome Cisco back. Veteran good guy mentor who was a big brother to Cuz, can hit a three, really perfect for an 11th-12man type for us.

A stretch 3 who can't shoot, has an inflated self worth on the basketball floor, and will put himself above the team when he goes into shooting slumps by jacking up even more shots (he did this repeatedly while playing for us the first time).

Thanks, but no thanks.

Here's the thing, one possible way to try to bring the roster mess under control is to sign cheap replacement guys who are just as good as your more expensive current pieces, then use the more expenses pieces in trades. In particular I am thinking about these sorts of moves:

In --> Casspi $1mil
Out --> DWill $6.8mil ender and/or Travis Outlaw $3mil ender

or

IN --> Brooks $min
OUT --> McLemore $3mil

or

IN --> Moreland $min
OUT --> any of the PF clutter

especially if we were going to be trying to combine several of our larger contracted guys together to bring back just 1 larger bad contract. Need competent bodies. Cheaper the better.

Caspi instead of who? DWill? Outlaw? Be a little more specific. He is not perfect but our team is not perfect either.
I don't care who caspi replaces just as long as I never have to see Derrick Williams on the floor for us again. He gives zero effort on both ends of the floor, is a streaky shooter, and can't rebound to save his life.
