Telemachus Prediction Game 2016-17: (Prediction-) Game Over!! See You in a New Thread Next Season

#1
Hi everyone!! An exciting night!!

I want to try and run a prediction game for tonight,
and if it catches - we can go on, and make it a full season game.
It's your (our) decision. :)

I'd like to propose my own scoring rules, that proved very balanced and successfull
in a prediction game that I ran with my friends throughout all 84 games of last year's NBA Playoffs (Unfortunately without our beloved Kings...)

The idea is that you don't just make a binary prediction of W or L -
To make it more interesting & fun (and less of an empty gamble):
1. You must try and predict the exact score of the game!
2. You get points for being close, as well!

I will explain the (simple) Scoring Rules in just a minute, below
but you are already welcome to pitch-in with your predictions.

I suggest that all predictions be made HERE (on the public, open stage of a forum)
and IN ADVANCE (before the game begins). I hope you all agree.

My own prediction for tonight is:
Kings - 99
Suns - 92

Join in - I am quite sure it's going to be fun!

Grading System:

It's quite simple - you can total up to a 100 points for your prediction:
1. You get 40 pts for predicting the winner.
2. You get up to 30 pts for predicting the points margin of the game (Directional! +10 is not the same as -10!)
3. You get up to 15 pts for predicting the score of each of the teams (30 pts for both teams together)

You don't have to get it exactly right to earn points:
The closer you are to the actual score of each team, or to the actual point margin - the more points you get.
If you're not even close (more than 8 points off-mark for a team score, or more than 10 points off-mark for the margin) - you get nothing.

Here is a chart to sum it all up:

Once again - I assure you that it's quite well balanced and tested.

Perfect 100's are rare, of course (we only had one of those in over 300 individual predictions),
but you can get 50's, 60's and even 70's quite often.

If you failed to name the winning team, you will always fall short of anyone who predicted the correct winner (and earned 40 points),
but if you come close enough to the overall score and the difference - you will not trail by a lot!

For instance:
If I predict that the Kings Win 105-104, but in reality the Kings Lose 105-106,
then I will get no W/L pts, but I will still get a nice score of 33 -
  • the full 15 pts for the Kings' score (exactly 105)
  • 6 pts for Opponent's score (off by just 2: 106 instead of 104)
  • 12 pts for the score diff (off by just 2 again: -1 instead of +1)

If the score calculation seems like a lot of work - It's not. :D

I have the scoring sheet ready, so once I type in the predictions and the actual result - everything will be calculated automatically.

And here are the results!

No less than 20 of us KingsFans participated tonight,
and the surprising leader after game 1 is... @Blob !

Why is that surprising?
Well, simply because he didn't even participate in this prediction thread!
He took this one thanks to his prediction on his Game Preview thread.

Still, if the prediction was made publicly, here on a KF forum,
and if it was made on time (before tip-off) - it's 100% legit. :D

This looks like a winner! Only 10 points off the Kings score and nailed the Suns.
Well, almost...
A great prediction! but it was only good for 2nd place.

Note that @Blob made a public prediction of 110-93 in his Game Preview thread, 48 hours before the game...
He even named it his "Fearless Prediction"... and it turns out it WAS!

He probably doesn't even know that - but he won tonight's Prediction Game.

So, it's @Blob in #1, and then
@origkds & @Starting Five splitting the second place, with the same prediction!

Let's keep this on for Game 2!
First game ever in our new home arena!

Predictions, anyone?

I know spitter too! Haha I'm always on the board following along.
Lol someone should post a Kings thread on there to get them riled up. I got run out of there after complaining about the Warriors thread after my Kings thread last year got deleted for being OT. Seems like you're only allowed to be a Warriors and Niners fan over there.

But he didn't post it in this thread for all to see. We shouldn't have to scour other threads, should we?

Post it here or it doesn't count ;)
