Kings Recall Tyler Honeycutt from D-League

just heard on the Napear show. Honeycutt has been called back and should be available for the game vs GSW wednesday.

    he averaged 11points, 9rebounds, 46%shooting in 7 games

i say throw him in there as the backup SF, why not? this season is over anyway, lets see what this kid can do with real minutes. looks like he is a great rebounder for his size

Surely he couldn't be worse than James Johnson/Outlaw.

  3. #3
i dont think he could be worse than any SF option we have besides Salmons sometimes i guess

  4. #4
This would be exciting if I knew he would get a consistent 18-20 minutes and we wouldn't see anymore JJ, Outlaw, Cisco

To me this seems pointless simply because he won't be getting any minutes. If he was going to get 15-20 minutes each game then it would be a great move (mind you with his frame he will get smashed by SFs in the NBA) but why recall a kid to sit at the end of the bench when he is in desperate need of playing some games.

Another one of those "WTF?!" moments from our front office and the coaching staff.

EDIT: or could this be a sign that there is a trade coming?!
Jim Capers once called a foul on me while I was sitting on the bench. Tweet! "Foul, number fifty-three! Five-three!" Everybody was confused and looking around for number 53, so I stood up and said, "I'm over here and the only thing I'm fouling is the water bottle." - Darryl Dawkins

Tyreke and Thornton are out as far as we know so... bodies.

Honeycutt has shown flashes of being very quick, playing above the rim and having a jump shot out to 3pt range. What we don't know is can he play defense and stay in front of NBA SF, benchers for sure and maybe starting type SF. In his last game vs. LA Defenders this past saturday he had 18 pt, 12 reb, 2 ast, 1 stl, and 4 blocks! So some hope. Guess we'll see.

Ironicly, in college, defense was what he known for. His problem was, and still is, lack of strength. Unfortunately, everytime he tries to add weight, some other part of his body thats attached to his leg breaks. He is however, a very good athlete. I'd like to see him get some minutes so the Kings can see what they have with him.

The latter was my thought as nothing else made sense.

I was just about to post something saying that it would be beneficial to the development of some of our young guys if we sent Fredette down to the D-League and kept him and Hoenycutt there the entire year. It would benefit Fredette because he would be able to work on his ballhandling and defense while getting 30+ minutes a game. It would benefit Honeycutt because he would still play and get experience while he is still trying to add more weight for the NBA. It would benefit Thomas because he would have a consistent 15-20 mpg which should help him relax and find his rookie season form once again.

That move would help all 3 of those guys develop and improve their games. I would like to see a rotation that allows our young guys to get more minutes. This season isn't looking to hot right now, so why not play our young guys and try to develop them? This rotation would be okay with me:

    PG - Brooks (20 min)/Thomas (20 min)/Evans (8 min)
    SG - Evans (18 min)/Thornton (30 min)/Garcia (0 min)
    SF - Salmons (28 min)/Evans (11 min)/Johnson (9 min)/Outlaw (0 min)
    PF - Thompson (17 min)/Robinson (25 min)/Johnson (6 min)/Hayes (0 min)
    C - Cousins (35 min)/Thompson (13 min)

    Evans - 37 min
    Cousins - 35 min
    Thornton - 30 min
    Thompson - 30 min
    Salmons - 28 min
    Robinson - 25 min
    Brooks - 20 min
    Thomas - 20 min
    Johnson - 15 min
    Hayes - 0 min
    Garcia - 0 min
    Outlaw - 0 min

Then in the D-League, Fredette and Honeycutt would be getting 30-35 mpg.

The major problem, twslam07, is that they don't play against NBA quality players like with the athleticism, etc. All our young players need minutes to play against guys at full speed and not just at practice. It's a mess that most young players face.

That is a valid point and I understand that the D-League does not usually have NBA quality players, but it is called the developmental league for a reason. Players are sent there when they are not ready to play in the NBA yet.

In Honeycutt's case, his strength and wieght are major issues for him playing at the NBA level right now. Why not let him play heavy minutes in the D-League while he continues to add weight and prepare for the NBA?

In Fredette's case, his ballhandling and defense are major issues for him playing at the NBA level right now. Why not let him play heavy minutes in the D-League while he continues to improve his ballhandling and defense for the NBA?

I understand and encourage the premise of giving your young guys minutes, but if they have glaring weaknesses that can be taken advantage of every time up and down the floor, I think it is safe to say they should be sent to the D-Leage to improve some of their skills.

Let these guys improve on their weaknesses without hurting team.

Jimmer doesn't deserve to be sent to the D League. He is an NBA quality player. Sure it would be nice to work on some things but he's just going to have to do it in practices and in the limited minutes that he gets in games now.

Even if he is an "NBA quality player," he has some pretty significant weaknesses that he still needs address. Robinson has some weaknesses as well (offensive game), but a team can't take advantage of those weaknesses the same way a team can take advantage of Fredette's ballhandling and defensive weaknesses.

We have 3 guys who play the PG spot right now. Brooks, Thomas, and Fredette. We should only be giving two of them significant minutes. Brooks should remain the starter because he has found a nice role next to Evans. That leaves the minutes to either Thomas or Fredette (and yes I do realize Smart does not do it this way). Well both of these guys are young and talented and should get to see the floor to help with their development. Why not let the more NBA ready PG (Thomas) get the minutes at the NBA level and then send down Fredette to the D-League to get significant minutes there? Fredette's deficiencies will not be taken advantage of anymore because he will be playing in Reno, both Fredette and Thomas will see significant minutes every game they play which will help them find rhythm, and the log jam at PG has been solved which should ultimately lead to better and more consistent play.

If anyone has watched the Laker games and seen what Earl Clark (been in the L 4 years) has been able to do when given a chance, I think that we should at least give Tyler a chance hes athletic can rebound and shoot a bit from what I have seen.

Have been the other lone voice to give Honeycutt some minutes as he has shown flashes of being very good. But flashes of inexperience rookie as well. But whose minutes does he take at the 3 right now? Salmons? JJ? if he is to get minutes then Coach has to bite the bullet and do it. Have two bottom feeder teams in next week. maybe then.
