Geoff Petrie. The man who collects a check and puts a crap on the floor.

I used to have the utmost respect for Geoff. But I don't see how anyone with any pride could stay here and put out such a crappy product year in and year out. He clearly doesn't care any more and is just collecting a check until he retires. Any other logical explanations?

i gotta say, that thread title got me to LOL pretty good. well done sir.

as for Petrie, yes, screw him. sure the Maloofs dont give him the best budget to work with. but he still has made awful trades and awful draft picks.

2 years ago, team needs a SF, but screw it, lets draft Jimmer so we can sell jerseys and get a little media attention!
this year, still need a SF and a backup Center, screw Harrison Barnes and Andre Drummond and also screw Lillard who really impressed us in predraft workouts, lets draft another undersized big man.

What did the Maloofs promise you, Mr. Anthony?

It's the owners the more I think about it. The Adelman fiasco, the Jimmer draft after trading down.

He's a relic. Never have I seen someone go from literally the top of their profession to someone who needs to be fired yesterday. It's trippy for me as well. Ten years ago I worshipped the ground this guy walked on as a Kings fan and held him as some type of borderline diety. Now I have as much confidence in his personnel decisions as I do if I were the one making them

As much as I want to blame the Maloofs, Geoff has to be given a share of the blame. Unless the Maloofs are straight up telling him to assemble the team poorly, he did use up all of the cap space this off season on decisions that have not improved the team. We can say he is being restrainted by ownership, but other GM's are doing more with the same amount of cap space.

Petrie isn't a bad GM by any means but in the last couple of years he just seems to have lost his will. And to his credit, he's been in this position for over 15 years. It's certainly natural to get burned out after so long. Maybe a change of scenery would be beneficial to both sides.

Petrie certainly seems to have lost something. I know he has lost a lot of staff. I don't have a clue if he is responding to having the Maloofs as employers. It's silly to be repetitious but we need a new owner and he/she/they can pick their own front office.
    Upwards and onwards.

Love the thread title.. I can actually picture Petrie with a mop bucket full of crap mopping the court with it.

Petrie is probably one of the worst GMs in the league now. He has ran his course. It's time to move on.

I bet half of the posters on this board could put together a better team through trades and draft. I know my draft picks have been better than his for the last 6 years.
    THANK YOU MAYOR JOHNSON!
    Thank you Vivek Ranadive!

Thank you every other minority owner!

You all saved the Sacramento Kings! Long live Sacramento!

The problem is we don't really know how much control he really has. For all we know, the Magoofs are calling most of the shots. I mean, who in their right mind would just quit a multi million dollar yearly income?

That's the real issue for me. I'm not totatlly convinced this is the product Petrie would put on the floor or the coach he would choose if he wasn't forced to play with pennies to put a team together. Does anyone really think if he had the 4-5 million budget that most teams have for head coaches that he would extended Smart? He's not totally absolved of blame, but it's hard to put everything on him with the type of ownership we have

People need to stop making the low payroll excuse for Petrie. The Oakland A's had a winning season and an exciting playoff run. The A's have many of the same issues: small market, low payroll, outdated facility, penny-pinching owner. Billy Beane was still able to get things done; of course it helps when you still have a pulse.

Low payroll teams/small markets becoming successful is more of the exception rather than the rule. Most teams will eventually have a good run and get lucky with players but it is still pretty rare. We had a good run in the Webber era, if we have another one in the next decade I will be happy.

geoff petrie's track record in sacramento has been terrible now for a much greater stretch than it ever was spectacular. he had a damn good run for a few years with the vintage kings of the early 00's. but a few good years do not justify his presently inert and complacent approach to reconstructing his team, nor do they justify the contract extensions he's consistently received. truth be told, things went downhill quickly the minute he traded chris webber. i don't think it was a trade he wanted to make, and it's been one bad decision after another ever since, as if he's haunted by the ghost of kenny thomas' contract or something. in the years that followed the "flexible pieces" disaster, GP has brought so many useless, listless scrubs to sacramento, players with minimal utility that never shored up the team's weaknesses. of course, no one saw kevin martin developing into a legitimate scoring threat in the nba, so GP got a bit lucky in that draft. it kept the kings afloat, or rather mired in utter mediocrity. that said, it took far too many years to jumpstart an official rebuild of this team. drafting tyreke evans and demarcus cousins were then "duh" moves of the highest order by the time petrie and co. got around to it. trading for marcus thornton was also a relatively inspired move, i must say, but we've yet to see the dividends in the envisioned role of thornton as 6th man. now that the kings finally have a couple of worthwhile pieces to build around, ownership and management have decided to opt for gimmicks rather than competitiveness, from hiring and extending a coach fresh outta the school of gimmick ball, to making isaiah thomas a focal point of the offense, to buying into jimmermania despite much more pressing needs than bringing over another tweener guard, to signing aaron brooks despite much more pressing needs than bringing over yet another tweener guard, to doling out minutes like candy on halloween, to giving the offensive greenlight to every single king on the court, short of the ball boy, all the while forgetting that demarcus cousins and tyreke evans were always going to need to be treated like the cornerstones of this team in order for it to succeed. it's as if this franchise is reading from the book on how not to win after drafting two impact players in subsequent drafts. it's embarrassing. absolutely embarrassing. ownership deficiencies aside, petrie needed to be canned yesterday. and by yesterday i mean years ago...

That only works in baseball because you're able to stash young players in the minors and you have greater roster flexibility than in basketball. You can't compare sports because each sport has different systems to succeed in. Basketball is based off of a star system and you need stars in order to compete.

He is a GREAT employee to the Maloofs. He does EXACTLY what they want. Cut costs, hire cheap coaches, dump salaries in trades, pick up discards from the waiver wire, show up once a year for the draft. Cost savings >>>> Quality .... he follows their lead and does a great job at it without pointing the finger at them or burning them in the press. I'm sure from his point of view, he is very happy with the work he's doing FOR HIS BOSSES.

How far away from the salary cap are the Kings? I was under the impression that they were flirting with the cap.

    That's correct. About $58M.

So the Kings have spent money. Just not wisely.

We are one of the rare teams that is not over the salary cap. The Kings have the 4th lowest salary in the league. The salary cap can be exceeded and in the next few years must be exceeded to keep Tyreke and Cuz. Heck, the luxury cap can be exceeded if you are willing and able to pay the luxury tax. The Lakers team salary is around $100 mil. for example. It is routine for teams to be over the salary cap.

The difference is that the A's owner gives 100% control to BB. I'm pretty sure that's not the case with the Maloofs. I would almost guarantee you the Maloofs were the one who traded for Jimmer.
