    Gortat

    Emerging today was a story (a dubious story with a source originally in a Polish newspaper) that the Celtics might be trying to line up a play for Marcin Gortat. This likely a fallout of some perception he may welcome a move after his comments about Alvin Gentry ignoring him on offense.

    Well, got me thinking. If Marcin Gortat WERE out there, we are certainly a team with assets to easily outpoint any offer the Celtics could make (the implied offers were picks + kids, and maybe an ender (Sarver being cheap of course).

    Gortat is still on a very reasonable salary: $7.3 this year, $7.7 next year. His arrival would of course mean Boogie would have to shift back to PF, with JT and Hayes off the bench. Minutes would get squeezed, but it would also become just about the biggest, roughest frontcourt in the league.

    Expendable pieces I could see them interested in:
    1) Cisco (ender, just to match salaries);
    2) IT (cheap could be ender + backup PG/change of pace guy in their running system, think they were high on him);
    3) Jimmer (maybe: could gun in the run n gun);
    4) TRob (maybe, another undersized PF to go with their stable, including the guy who used to start over him at Kansas, but high pick + could thrive in run n gun)
    5) our #1 this season (with this trade we would presumably be angling to make it a #10+ rather than a #1 to #5)

    (note, Brooks failed in their sytem 2 years ago, they would not be interested there)

    other pieces they could like that I would call off limits:
    1) Reke (ender, fills their weakest position)
    2) Johnson (ender, so they might have na interest, but I woudln't want to give up on him just yet, since the idea would be to accumulate more defenders, not swap one for the next)

    Thornton, Thompson, Hayes, Salmosn are all vets with ongoing contracts, so despite potentially filling their SG spot, or covering the hole left by Gortat's departure, if they are looking for enders and cheap kids, they would not fit. Which is fine by me.

    Could you actually get him wiht a TRob/IT package? What about an IT/Cisco/#1 package? TRob, Jimmer + 2nd? I don't know. But a Gortat/Cousins/Thomposn/Hayes frontcourt would be formidable and able to match up with anyone. Reke getting increasing PG minutes could fill any shortage there. Problems are that one of TRob/JT or Hayes would ahve to go, either as part of the deal (TRob) or in a separate deal. Just no time even for 4 guys, let alone 5. Problem #2 is that Gortat wants more shots than he's getting, and he's getting more than JT already. So unless we trade enough of our chuckers for him, it could add even more shot stress to our linueps. IT and TRob would be a decent setoff, or Jimmer in there somewhere, but those guys are all benche guys restraining themslves a bit. Gortat would start. Brooks/Salmons would have to be very good about not shooting going forward.

    Gortat
    Cousins
    Salmons
    Evans
    Brooks

    Thompson
    Hayes
    Johnson
    Thornton
    Jimmer

    Cisco
    Outlaw

    sample in a TRob/IT scenario. Lot of size/maybe good mix of offense/defense. Worth it?

    We still owe that conditional #1 to Cleveland from the JJ (Hickson) trade, so that's a no-go.

    I guess the question is whether Gortat is worth giving up on TRob's potential. I'm not sure they send Gortat out without getting TRob back, but we'd have to be really convinced he's not going to amount to much.

    Gortat has developed into a pretty good player in the league, and a good post defender. I'd be happy to trade T. Robb and IT for him. I don't think I'd give up much more than that though. Maybe throw in a second round pick. Unfortunately, I just don't see the Suns giving up Gortat. He plays the bulk of the minutes at center, and they really don't have anyone else to play that position if he's gone, other than O'Neal, whose a thousand years old.

    I think our offer would have to be very attractive to pry him loose. I'd love to have have, the question is, how much are we willing to give up to get him? I don't think IT and T. Robb would do it.

    If it was Thornton instead of Evans I would say definitely yes. Don't see them moving Dragic so soon though. I don't think I have to mention who I would have in mind instead of Dragic.

    Reference the original trade idea, the ball handling off the bench looks weak, but if you swap Jimmer/Johnson and Salmons/Brooks, it might work. Gortat/JJ should be enough presence to back Jimmer's D, it would just put a lot of pressure on him to be that big time shooter.

    I think we've seen enough of Johnson next to Reke to last us a while.

    But you could try Jimmer in there with the starters. Or maybe not try him at all -- with Reke playing more and more PG its not impossible a rational coach might slowly spin this into a standard three guard lineup wiht PG- Brooks, SG-Thornton, PG/SG-Reke if Jimmer couldn't handle his part of the load.

    Thing about not liking his offensive role makes me really iffy on this seemingly good opportunity. It feels Kings already have a few players with the same attitude problem.

    The question is, why do you want Gortat to begin with?

    Because he's a top center who may be available and all we've done on KF.com for the past 10 years is complain about not having a C capable of playing good D?

    Mainly because Gortat has developed into one of the best defensive centers in the league. last season he averaged a double/double, 15.4 PPG, and 10 RPG, along with 1.5 blocked shots a game.

    This year he's just shy of a double/double so far at 12 PPG, and 9.1 RPG. However his blocked shots per game is up to 2.4. He's also a decent freethrow shooter at 72%, and his overall shooting percentage is at a very respectable 53.7%. He only 28 years old, so if traded for, and resigned, he'd be a part of the team going forward for some time

    Yes! Would do this in a heartbeat!

    It gets us back to something resembling the Cousins-Dalembert-JT trio that was giving fits to the opponents there form a while.
    Jim Capers once called a foul on me while I was sitting on the bench. Tweet! "Foul, number fifty-three! Five-three!" Everybody was confused and looking around for number 53, so I stood up and said, "I'm over here and the only thing I'm fouling is the water bottle." - Darryl Dawkins

    So you put Cousins at the power forward spot? How's he going to guard anybody? If he's getting into foul trouble now, what would you anticipate when he has to guard quicker power forwards?

  16. #16
    I absolutely love Gortat. He's a skilled 2-way defensive big who has an assortment of offensive moves at his disposal. My only worry would be Cousins having to guard PF's on a consistent basis, but there's no doubt about the tremendous impact he would have for us. An offer would have to resemble MT+Trob esq package for PHX to part with him though

    Once again I would say, that's why Drummond was the perfect sidekick to Cousins. He takes the best frontcourt opponent and is excellent defender already(Drtg 100, the next two best on Pistons are Monroe at 102 and Villanueva at 105). He has the second best Ortg on Pistons as well at 111. Surprise, suprise Drummond is also showing 19,9% rebounding rate. And blocks are just an icing.
    Putting away dreampipe...Varejao and Noah are two next best frontcourt mates for Cousins. The first one is aging and the other plays for potential Conference Finalists already. Milwaukee seem to have too many of those guys Kings could use. Saunders looks particularly intriguing

    I would love to see Varejao on the Kings. I've liked Gortat, but always considered him to be an outside-in offensive big. After looking at the stats, however, it appears that he hangs around the basket much more than I thought. I would make that trade outlined by Brick.

    I would love Gortat, is he able to cover the kinds of PF's that Cousins struggles against? Sammy Dalembert was great in that role.

    I bet we could get Scola. Suns have made him a bench player and he might be easier and less expensive to trade for.
