    Oh please.

I'm guessing you never saw Larry Bird play in his prime. If you did, you wouldn't be making such silly (IMHO) comments. Larry Bird is one of the greatest to ever play the game. I saw him play - twice - and there is no doubt in my mind the Larry Bird I saw could be just as relevant in today's NBA as he was back then.

Stop with the "Oh please". This isn't anything to "oh please" about. Actually I have seen him play a number of times. I know how great he was. I'm not doubting that he was one of the greatest to play, I'm just saying with so many changes it would be extremely difficult for him or nearly any player to come in and dominate the same way they did. He likely still could be very relevant in the NBA, just not nearly the same. It's really just a difference of opinion and there is no clear cut right or wrong. Just accept that I have a different opinion than you and move on with your life. Oh please.

And I'm saying you're jumping way off assumption cliff and into conclusion pond with little to no basis in fact. As for the mimickry? Thanks. I appreciate the flattery.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion and it's certainly different. But if you're going to post it here, don't expect comments like what you made to go unchallenged.

I'm fine with people challenging it, I love a good discussion. What annoys me is people saying things like
    ....
    Oh please...

It just makes it seem like you think your opinion is so much more important than everyone else's.

Dude you just said Larry Bird wasn't going to be any kind of star in today's NBA, what did you expect

What is so farfetched about that? If you just somehow warped him from when he was playing to our time, you think he could just step in and dominate the same exact way he did before? In my opinion, as I have said before, the very large differences in the game would adversely affect him.

Yes he would step in and dominate the game, very much as he did 25 years ago. And no amount of Andres Nocionis, Trevor Arizas, Travis Outlaws, Shane Battiers, Hedo Turkoglus, Peja Stojakovics, or Marvin Williames (various starting SFs around the league in the playuoffs (except Noc) would be able to do anything about it. The game has not changed that much in the last two decades. It really hasn't. There is a direct line with players from that era -- I have seen Bird play Pippen, seen Pippen play Peja. Seen Bird deal with Hakeem Olajuwon, David Robinson, Patrick Ewing and Kareem Abdul Jabbar on the inside, and see maybe one guy who deserves to be in the same breath with them playing today. In the NBA the "old time player" modifier works for the 50s, for much of the 60s, but begins to become irrelevant by the 70s, let alone the 80s. By the 80s the players were as big or nearly as big *** they are today, Magic and Bird and MJ and Mailman and Barkley and Hakeem and Admiral and Stockton and KJ and Richmond etc. etc. etc. were all playing. The centers were 7'0". The SFs 6'9". And the legendary players of that era would have kicked general *** in this era just as they did in their own.

Ok, if you believe that, do you also believe that he could defend just as well as he did in his time?

Accounting for rule changes, yes. Larry was bad***. A couple decades doesn't change that.
Jay Triano on Tyreke (3/1010): In the third quarter I thought we started to come back tonight then he just picked us apart. We can’t stop him with one guy. Their confidence was rolling so he kicks it out and they start making threes. He’s tough to guard.

Kim Hughes on Tyreke (2/28/10): He is a tremendous talent. The primary focus of our defense was to stop him. He is virtually impossible to guard one-on-one.

not to interrupt a good ol' fashioned bold-name gang up, its time to make my pick.

and damn, its too bad Oscar Bobertson, Micheal Jordan, Shaqille O'Neal, and Kareen Abdul-Jabarr are taken....I wanted those guys! Haha, but serously though SLAB, watch out for those typoes, you're really gonna have to with my pick.

I'm gonna make the obvious pick here with the available board in this Dream Team draft. Its time for me to go to bed, so give me The Dream.

    Hakeem Olajuwon - C

The smoothest big man to ever play the game. Not as dominant as Wilt or Bill, but maybe a better teammate than both (or at least Wilt). And who can argue against that Dream Shake?
Time-sensitive names suck. Don't do them. Don't make my same mistake.

Olajuwon, nice. I wanted to go big with my 1st pick and if Kareem didn't fall to me, Olajuwon definitely would've been an option. Greg Ostertag too.

Looking forward to seeing how these next few picks go, let's get this rolling again!

    I pick.........

The logo. Nuff said. The man who graces every jersey in the NBA. Jerry West.

I could have went a number of ways with this pick. There might be some flashier names or other picks that would garner more votes from the younger generation, but taking into account the dream TEAM concept I ultimately went with West. (and besides he will also function as my GM in helping me construct the rest of my squad ).

Some tidbits taken from his NBA.com bio...
    • Combine a deadly jump shot, tenacious defense, obsessive perfectionism, unabashed confidence, and an uncompromising will to win, and you've got Jerry West
    • He was an All-Star every year of his career and led Los Angeles to the NBA Finals nine times
    • Many players have been tagged with the nickname "Mr. Clutch," but none of them lived up to it as well as West did.
    • In the 1965 NBA Playoffs, West averaged 40.6 ppg over 11 contests; his 46.3 ppg average against Baltimore in the division finals was a record for a six-game series.
    • In the 1969 NBA Finals against Boston, West became the only member of a losing team ever to win the Finals MVP Award.
    • West was named to the All-NBA First Team 10 times in his career, and he was selected to the NBA All-Defensive First Team in four of his final five seasons (all defensive team did not exist in his first 6 years of playing)
    Career Stats:
    27 PPG 5.8 RPG 6.7 APG

Accomplishments: Elected to Basketball Hall of Fame (1980); NBA Finals MVP (1969); NBA Champion (1972); All-NBA First Team (1962-'67, '70-'73); All-NBA Second Team (1968, '69); NBA All-Defensive Team (1970-73); NBA Champion (1972); 14-time NBA All-Star (1961-'74); NBA All-Star MVP (1972); Olympic gold medalist (1960); NBA 35th Anniversay Team (1980); One of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History (1996).
