The Kings front line just got bigger and better. With the 10th pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, Sacramento picked Spencer Hawes, a 7-0 center from the University of Washington. Hawes is one of the most potent offensive low post threats in the draft.
In early May, Kings.com conducted a poll where 88 percent of respondents thought the Kings should select either a power forward or a center in the draft. Looks like Kings fans just got their wish.
Hawes’ father, Jeff, played at Washington from 1972 to 1974, and his uncle, Steve, played at Washington from 1970 to 1972 before playing in the NBA for 10 years.
So what advice did his pop and uncle give him upon entering the draft? “Hard work!” Hawes said emphatically after hearing his name called by NBA commissioner David Stern. “You’re only as good as the work you put into it,” he said, referring to the advice his dad and uncle gave him. “And everyday I go to workout, that’s the approach I’ll take.”
While many of the other bigs are very good in transition, Hawes is a great fit for the half court game. He can score on the high or low post, and his left or right hand hook has proven to be more than reliable. He’s also a great distributor for his size with passing ability that’s keen beyond his years.
“I hope to contribute in whatever way to help the team win,” Hawes said. “I don't know what that will be yet, but that's something I'm looking forward to.”
In only one season at Washington, Hawes, 19, averaged nearly 15 points per game, and 6.4 boards. He’s a strong shot blocker, as he averaged almost two per outing as a Husky. Some NBA scouts compare him to a well-liked former King, Vlade Divac. He’s also been compared to the Los Angeles Clippers skilled big man, Chris Kaman.
Offensively, he’s as skilled as they come for a big man. Hawes has great footwork, and obviously has been groomed to play in the NBA. He sees the floor extremely well, and has a great feel for passing out of double teams.
A west coast kid from Seattle, Hawes is happy to remain close to family, and can’t wait to play for the Kings 6th Man in Sacramento.
“One of the things I do know about the organization is how great the fans are, and how loyal they are,” Hawes said. “I’ve heard from some people that it’s almost like a college atmosphere, so I can’t wait!”

Um...hope you realize that the above does not exactly prove that Hawes is a stud, even in college, let alone the NBA. We'll see. But his college numebrs are the last things anybody should be breaking out to try to prove his studness. They were wanting.

I'm just so glad we did not take another SG/SF/Combo guard. Douby was a waste of a pick, Kmart is way better and he is the future of our squad. Hawes is not going to be Tim Duncan, but unlike Brad Miller the guy actually loves basketball and knows what hard work means. Hard work for Brad Miller, is a hunting trip.

I admit to almost throwing something at my TV when the pick was announced... but Hawes is growing on me as a reasonable choice at that spot. Nobody in front of us helped us out one bit. Every guy picked 1-9 is better than Hawes. But he is big, skilled, and 19 years old. Might be ok.

I wonder if the first time I heard of him - if he had been compared to Kaman and Vlade, instead of Miller... how I would have felt. Probably a lot better.

Why is it so important to constantly bring up what Brad Miller does in the off-season? He probably doesn't give a damn what you think and I'm sure he doesn't give a damn what you do with your time off/vacation. Some of the name calling and remarks made by the fans? about Brad (behind a false name, of course) are disgusting. If you dislike him (or "hate" him as has been said several times) because of his playing and you comment on that, fair enough, but to continue the personal attacks is wrong IMHO. Let's get back to basketball. Annie.

I think to critique how a professional athlete takes care of his body year round is fair game. I think poor work ethic - showing up in October out of shape and/or running out of gas in April, is grounds for getting blasted on fan blogs.

The attempted equation of "fan" with "simpering moron who would cheer wildly for Shawn Bradley if he was told to do so" never fails to astound me. Of course said equation is normally attempted by....well, best not to get into that.

Nobody will boo Hawes on opening night I am confident. Whether he thereafter earns cheers or not is a separate question. And a very legitimate one. I can't write off a big guy with those kind of post skills and continue to cling to my "it works out" scenario, but he has exactly the wrong sort of game to fail "small". If he fails, he falls flat on his face and is nearly useless (as opposed to a guy like Noah who basic agame is defense/hustle and so will always have a role even if he does not blossom).



P.S. The issue with Brad is that his work ethic sucks. As he is being $12million dollars and we cannot get out of that immense financial committment, the LEAST the big ole hick could do is put down the brewskie and work out. The contract goes both ways. We pay you megabucks, the understanding is you have a responsibiltiy to be a pro and try to be your very best.
