Darko has actually shown a lot of promise during his career, but people moan and say he's the worst big in the league because he was never a star. He is a starting caliber player (yes, I just said that). He is a good rebounder, shotblocker, and fair post passer. He has good hands. He's athletic (or was when he was drafted.). Give the Darko jokes a rest.

Ok so theres a lot of talk about Michael CW. as being a fit for us. LETS ASSUME we keep Evans and he plays at the 2.

Pros:
1. passing --- boy do we need a actual facilitator with court vision that can set up all these other more selfish scorers.
2. Defense-- great athlete, that tested well at the combine. gets a lot of steals.
3. Size-- this team could would be very tall! Williams and Evans in the backcourt.

Cons:
1. 3pt shooting-- Williams lack of range would have HUGE effect on the lineup he plays with....we really need more 3pt range ... if we keep Evans at the 2. that leaves us with only one player on the floor that has the ability to shoot 3's at a high clip. and that player is Salmons /= ok so maybe not even one player can shoot 3's at a high %... Clearly WE ABSOLUTELY NEED A NEW SF!!! THAT IS A 3PT SHOOTING MACHINE especially if we draft Williams. The other option here is Cousins is paired with a PF that can shoot 3's ala Patrick Patterson.... so best case is that we have Patterson, Cousins, mystery 3pt shooting SF, Evans and Willaims. so 2 players in this line up can stretch the floor and shoot 3's. Patterson and the SF.

so obviously this kinda hurts the idea of having a Shot Blocker on the floor with Cousins... something im not to keen on... of course if Evans ever develops a consistent shot then this whole needing a 3pt shooting PF is no longer necessary. But as you can see having a PG without Shooting Range on this team is an issue.

curious to hear what you guys think.

May 23, 2013

The crew of the Enterprise might not be the only ones facing the return of Khan this summer.

Former NBA executive David Kahn was spotted at Sacramento's Long Live the Kings rally last night. Adding to the intrigue, Kahn, who most recently served as general manager for the Minnesota Timberwolves, is exactly the sort of smart, brains over brawn executive that new Kings owner Vivek Ranadive is rumored to favor.

As longtime Kings general manager Geoff Petrie's own reputation for brilliance has begun to tarnish in recent years, Kahn has often been there to take advantage. When Petrie chose brawn over brains and passed on spanish sensation Ricky Rubio, Kahn quickly snapped up the sultry Spaniard. When longtime Kings coach Rick Adelman was let go, it was eventually Kahn who would convince Adelman to join the Timberwolves to babysit another high maintenance and injury prone frontcourt star in Kevin Love. When Petrie whiffed on attempts to sign Andrei Kirlienko, it was Kahn who eventually convinced the former Jazz defensive stopper to return to the NBA.

Now here Kahn was, dapper as always, basking in the Sacramento sun while soaking up the passion of a Kings fanbase back from the abyss. Tanned and trim at 51, Kahn's appeal has never been in his rippling muscles, but rather in his ready wit and ingenious intellect, traits that have only been emphasized as his high intelligent forehead has gradually lengthened.

When approached, he gave a sly knowing smile that will do little to calm speculation about his possible future as Kahn of the Kings.

Okay, we've all been able to exhale and take a few minutes to savor the knowledge that the Sacramento Kings will be the Sacramento Kings for at least 35 more years.

We here at Kingsfans.com are very glad to see so many of our old members returning to the fold. And we're also excited to see new members coming in to join the family.

This board is here thanks to the dedication and generosity of our board owner and administrator, Revgar (aka Jeremy). Through thick and thin, he's kept this board going so that we - the loyal Kings fans (and some of our other members who happen to root for other teams) - have a place to come to when we want to talk hoops, football, arena status, etc.

Where did you come when you wanted information about the latest city council happenings on the arena or anything else from player analysis to discussion of the latest tweets, posts or rumors? I'm guessing you came to KF, where you can find thoughtful posts from our knowledgeable and dedicated posters. And don't forget about the great job Mike0476 from CrownDowntown did in keeping us well informed on everything his incredible group was doing. Our members come from all walks of life and all corners of the globe, but we do share one thing in common - we love to talk hoops.

Jeremy would never do this himself, so I'm doing it for him. We want to build up our contributing memberships. We're already talking about some potential group events for next season. We've done them in the past and always had a blast. And with our new ownership group and the new arena on the horizon, we're looking forward to good times instead of always worrying about the bad.

There are some benefits to becoming a contributing member, besides the fact that you've helped to keep KF as the place where the best Kings fans come to talk hoops. You get the special "contributor" tag under your username, you can have a larger avatar and PM storage limits AND you get access to the "contributing members" only forum where you can get information on things like group tickets and member get-togethers.

Thanks for being part of our Kingsfans.com community. We appreciate all of you.

It seems that the consensus is that the Kings should re-sign Tyreke Evans and move forward with he and Cousins as building blocks for this team.

It seems that the consensus is that the Kings should re-sign Tyreke Evans and move forward with he and Cousins as building blocks for this team. So it only makes sense that part of the consideration in evaluating draft picks is how well that player (or players) fit with DMC and Tyreke.

This is not my evaluation of player talent, simply a look at how well I think they mesh with the two best talents currently on the roster.

Great Fits
Nerlens Noel - the yin to DeMarcus' yang. He'd provide weakside defense, shotblocking, rebounding and athleticism. He'll be bullied for sure, but DeMarcus can guard the bigger low post threat.
Otto Porter - Lacks the shooting we'd ideally like a SF to have with Evans & Cousins and is thin and not a explosive athlete. Still, a smooth and versatile SF that will likely be a great roleplayer with elite intangibles.
CJ McCollum - A scoring combo guard. I don't think he's Lillard or Curry but he can play on or off the ball, runs the P&R well, rebounds well for his size and could make a nice compliment to both Evans & Cousins
Gorgui Dieng - Needs to get stronger and is a bit raw but shotblocking and developing face up game mean he would be a great role playing PF next to Cousins.
Tony Snell - A guy I love if the Kings want to go with a big backcourt. Great shooter with length and elevation, good ballhandler and a very good on ball defender.
Reggie Bullock - Smart player who makes the right play and is an outstanding shooter. A bit slow as a SG and a bit undersized as a SF but could be a very nice role player.

Good Fits
Ben McLemore - at the very least he'll be a good, athletic "3 and D" player with a beautiful shot. A bit undersized and not a great handle which would force Tyreke to be the main ballhandler
Trey Burke - Is ball dominant and probably more of a scorer than playmaker which doesn't make him a great fit with Tyreke but he has a chance to be a very good all around PG so I'll call him a good fit
Alex Len - a gamble. He shows potential on both ends (rebounder/shotblocker, face up offensive game/screener) but isn't ready to contribute and will struggle against bigger opponents
Rudy Gobert - Shawn Bradley or Hasheem Thabeet? He would protect the rim and cover DMC's largest flaw while not demanding the ball on offense but he adds little else
Serge Karasev - Needs to develop physically but a good shooter and willing passer
Dario Saric - good size, ballhandling and passing, decent rebounding. A weak individual defender but with good length that mitigates it a bit. If his outside shooting were more consistent I'd be more enthusiastic.
Jeff Withey - He could fill Cole Aldrich's role, though he'd likely not be as good right away. A rotation player that would fit in.
Allen Crabbe - Long, deadeye shooter who doesn't need the ball in his hands to be effective. Can be too lax on the defensive end and I wish he was a better ballhandler, but a good fit

Poor Fits
Anthony Bennett - a scoring tweener forward (Corliss/Larry Johnson/Rodney Rogers) he is a poor defender and would make a bad fit next to Cousins at the PF and is doesn't belong at SF
Cody Zeller/Kelly Olynyk/Mason Plumlee - all too finesse and none are difference makers. Zeller is the best of the three, but still a poor pairing with DMC.
Shabazz Muhammad - Tyreke sized Ball dominant, non-passing SF who lacks an outside shot and is a mediocre defender
Michael Carter-Williams - Reminds me of a pre-injury Shaun Livingston. I like him as a prospect but not as a ball dominant, poor shooting PG on a team with Evans and Cousins
Steven Adams - I don't think his ceiling is higher than Jason Thompson and he'll take a few years to get there
Tony Mitchell - Stock is low after a down sophomore year. Can rebound, block shots and is an athletic PF. Not an ideal fit with Cousins but if last year was an aberration he could be a good value pick
Shane Larkin - Small, athletic chucker. No thanks.
Glen Rice Jr. - Good shooter/scorer but a bit too ball dominant and with some red flags. On the border of good and poor fit IMO.

Intriguing Fits
Victor Oladipo - Weak shooter and ballhandler and not a great compliment to Cousins or Evans but with his defensive intensity, rebounding and motor it'd be worth trying to make it work. Would make a shooting SF a necessity
Dennis Schroeder - Probably a poor fit, but his speed and quickness could make him a game changer.
Jamaal Franklin - Could be an ideal running mate for Tyreke other than his poor outside shooting. Strong rebounder as a SG. Again, would require a great shooting SF
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope - Good potential as a shooter/slasher and defender. Will take bad shots and is a poor ballhandler/passer
Lucas Nogueira - On paper his skills are a great fit with Cousins but he plays indifferent and hasn't developed as he should
Giannis Adetokunbo - Really interesting prospect. Point forward skills but years away from being a player. I don't see the Kings having the patience, especially when he likely wouldn't come over right away

Kings’ roster going into the 2013 season:
PG – Evans/Thomas/Tinsley
SF – Iguodala/Wright/Outlaw
PF – Dalembert/Patterson/Hayes
C – Cousins/Dieng

Kings’ roster going into the 2014 season:
PG – Evans/Thomas/Tinsley
SG – Oladipo/Bullock
SF – Iguodala/Wright/2014 2nd round pick
PF – Dalembert/Hill/Hayes
C – Cousins/Dieng

Kings’ 2013 Payroll:
$55.6 million

Kings’ 2014 Payroll:
$69.8 million

Specific Details
1. Release James Johnson: I think everyone knows this is coming. James just never seemed to find his place with this team, and it makes sense to cut him to free up more cap space to go after a more solid SF.

2. Release Toney Douglas: This is hard for me because I love what he brings to the table. His defense was refreshing to say the least. I could definitely see him as a long term fit next to Evans, but the fact that I would like to see Evans moved back to PG under a competent coach along with Thomas being on the books for so cheap is the reason why I give him the axe here. Similar to Johnson, cutting Douglas will free up more cap space to go after free agents.

3. Release Cole Aldrich: He performed in limited minutes for us, but I think we can do better either through free agency or the draft. For that reason, I would cut him.

4. Amnesty John Salmons: Let us rid ourselves of his salary. We can acquire a very solid player with the amount of cash we are paying him. He is an overpaid player and we have the opportunity to shed his salary, why not?

5. Resign Tyreke Evans for $44 million over 4 years: Evans is a key piece to this team. He is a very special talent, and you don’t let special talents walkout the door without knowing for sure they aren’t going to reach their potential. He has shown flashes of what he is capable of doing when he is being used correctly by his coach. Unfortunately, Evans has suffered under a strand of incompetent coaches. Hire a decent coach who knows how to utilize his abilities, and we will most likely see an all-star blossoming right in front of our eyes.

6. Offer a 5 year extension to Demarcus Cousins: This is a no brainer in my mind. We either live or die by Cousins. If we trade him, we will most likely be able to produce a playoff team in the next few years, but it is almost certain that team will not have a chance at winning an NBA title. If we keep Cousins, I absolutely think our chances at bringing an NBA title to Sacramento are that much greater. He is just that type of player. You don’t find them often, but when you do, you lock them up for as long as you can.

At this point our roster has a payroll of $40.9 mil and is composed of these players:
PG – Evans/Thomas/Fredette
SG – Thornton
SF – Outlaw
PF – Thompson/Patterson/Hayes
C – Cousins

7. Trade Jason Thompson and the 7th pick to the Bobcats for the 4th pick: I feel horrible about trading Thompson away. I’ve always considered him to be the perfect big man off the bench. If we could pull off Patterson in Thompson’s place, I would be thrilled, but I think it will take Thompson to pry the pick away from Charlotte. Charlottes’ big man situation is a bit of a mess. They have T. Thomas, Biyombo, Haywood, and Mullens (if they resign him). None of these players jump off the page to me. Thomas has been a disappointment throughout his career but can still provide shot blocking. Biyombo doesn’t have many aspects to his game as well. Haywood is a decent 4th or 5th big off the bench, but you don’t want a guy like that seeing heavy minutes. Mullens is probably the most skilled out of the four, but he shot 38.5% from the floor last season which is downright awful for a C. He’s also not a very effective rebounder which can only hurt his stock as a starting C.

I think Thompson would bring a very well rounded game to Charlotte and give them solid and consistent minutes at PF. They get a solid player on an inexpensive, long term deal just for dropping back two spots. That’s a hell of a deal. With the 7th pick they could go big again and take Len, Zeller, Adams, etc. and be on their way to a formidable big man rotation (Len, Thompson, Biyombo, Thomas, Haywood – Mullens would be relased)

Although Thompson is a significant loss for us, it is slightly negated by having Patterson on the team. He can fill Thompson’s shoes and give us decent minutes at PF. With the 4th pick, we will take McLemore, Porter, or Oladipo. I’m guessing the first two players won’t fall to us which leaves us with Oladipo. The more I watch this kid and read about him, the more I like him. His motor and defensive abilities would be greatly welcomed to our team atmosphere. Evans and Oladipo would make a very solid backcourt. Oladipo can even guard PGs if we prefer to put Evans on an easier matchup in order to conserve his energy for the offensive end. I think he would be a very good compliment to Evans and we would give a lot of teams headaches with the size, strength, athleticism, and defense of those two players.

8. Trade Marcus Thornton to the Jazz for the 21st pick: Thornton will need to be moved. With Evans, Oladipo, and Thomas on the team, there will be no minutes for him. His salary also limits our cap space. The Jazz are in need of a SG. They have Burks, but he is still a question mark at this point in time. I personally like Burks though and think he will be good SG in this league. He showed promise this year putting up good stats across the board, but the Jazz still need another SG. Thornton would be good fit for them. They could either have him start or come off the bench and play that 6th man role. He fills a need for them either way, and it only cost them their later 1st round pick.

With the 21st pick, we target a big man. Hopefully we draft someone we could realistically see playing next to Cousins down the road. Gobert, Adams, and Dieng would be my first choice if they are still available. All could potentially be a nice fit next to Cousins. I think Dieng has the greatest chance of still being available at 21 out of these three players though. Dieng has size, athleticism, shotblockng abilities, and a nice jumpshot. I would be very satisfied if we could take Dieng with this pick.

9. Trade Jimmer Fredette and the 36th pick to the Thunder for the 32nd pick: This trade is mostly to get Fredette off of our books, but it is also to give us a better shot at one of the valuable wing players that are projected to be going in the late 1st-early 2nd part of the draft. Crabbe, Rice, Bullock, and Hardaway are 4 players I would target all are excellent shooters which would be nice to have coming off the bench. I personally like Bullock due to his size, defense, and 3pt shooting. I would be ecstatic if he fell to us at 32.

The Thunder do this to pick up a great long range shooter to provide scoring and floor spacing for their star players that attract so much attention. The price to get Fredette is to move down 4 spots. That seems pretty reasonable.

10. Draft Victor Oladipo with the 4th pick: See #7

11. Draft Gobert, Len, Adams, Dieng, Withey, T. Mitchell, Nogueira, or Jaiteh with the 21st pick: See #8

12. Draft Crabbe, Rice, Bullock, or Hardaway with the 32nd pick: See #9

After the draft, our payroll will be around $30.1 million and the roster will look like this:
PG – Evans/Thomas
SG – Oladipo/Bullock
SF – Outlaw
PF – Patterson/Hayes
C – Cousins/Dieng

Who, in order, would you like to see us take at #7? Assuming that they're available.

Let's try and keep it realistic though - Clearly Noel, McLemore, Porter aren't going to drop that far. Burke could, however, so i'd put him in there.

Mine:

1. Trey Burke - Assuming he's there, he's ours.
2. Michael Carter-Williams
3. Anthony Bennett
4. Cody Zeller - Not as defensively-minded as Len, but without the health risks.
5. Shabazz Muhammed - If the top 3 aren't in the plan, go with a wildcard.

I figured I'd start a new thread for this since the "Who is available at the 7th pick" thread is being dominated by Tyreke talk anyway.

If Evans signs his tender it gives the Kings the ability to match any offer for him. But as I mentioned in the other thread, given the number of teams with caproom and the lack of star players available I think if Tyreke hits the open market he will get overpaid by some team looking to make a splash in free agency. Remember Joe Johnson getting a $100 million deal?

The difficult part is that Evans has a very specific skillset. I don't think he's nearly as effective off the ball and while his outside shot showed improvement the second half of last year, he's still not a great shooter. So do you commit to putting the ball in Tyreke's hands and build an offense around he and Cousins?

Or do you let him walk in free agency as part of a rebuild? And if so, would you trade Cousins as well?

Either these guys (one or both) are the core of a rebuild or they aren't because I don't see either being a role player. Both need the ball in their hands too much for that.

What say you?

In an exclusive interview with Kings.com, the multi-time All-Star dishes on his storied career, favorite Sacramento memories and much more.
One of the game’s most proficient scorers, Mitch Richmond became the 25th player in League history to pour in 20,000 career points while connecting on the fourth-most triples (1,196) in the NBA during the 1990s.
Pretty nice read. I'm always fond of Mitch. (It was him who got my attention to the Kings to begin with) Good stuff!
