    The Nightmare is Over

The announcement came after a lot of us had thought it wouldn't happen until tomorrow at the earliest. But the official word is in. Vivek Ranadive and his group have finalized a deal with the Maloof family to purchase the Sacramento Kings.

It's been a long and arduous journey, Kings fans. But it's a new day and the best is in front of us.

We owe a debt of gratitude to a lot of people, but we owe the most to Mayor Kevin Johnson. If it were not for his dedication and devotion to keeping the Kings AND finding a way to revitalize downtown at the same time, we'd merely be sitting here watching our TVs with memories of the days when Sacramento had an NBA team.

We have a team. And we'll have it for a long time.

    WE ARE SACRAMENTO!!

    WE ARE THE KINGS!!

    Kings fate is decided

With a vote of 22-8, the NBA Board of Governors today rejected the request of the Maloofs to relocate the Sacramento Kings to Seattle. With that vote, the sale to Seattle's Hansen/Ballmer group was also negated.

David Stern, speaking after the vote, said it was always about Sacramento. He said when the pending sale to Seattle was announced, Mayor Kevin Johnson came to the NBA and asked them what Sacramento needed to do. Stern said they laid out all of the huddles a potential Sacramento ownership group would need to jump and that Johnson was able to get it done.

At this point, the Maloofs are still the owners of the Sacramento Kings. George Maloof has denied rumors that his family would not deal with Ranadive. Stern indicated that he believes an agreement between the Maloofs and Ranadive could come as soon as within the next 24 hours.

Word from Kevin Johnson is that the Ranadive group will be working with the Maloofs around the clock to get the sale completed.

At last, Kings fans can exhale.

  • SUMMER LEAGUE v3.0 EYE CANDY

    Eye Candy at summer league

Don't get too excited just yet. Summer League in Las Vegas os the biggest sports melting pot in the world. There are 23 NBA teams represented from every corner of the country and every one of them has their cadre of fans. *Las Vegas is a Lakers town but the Sacramento Kings are well represented due to the Maloofs and their (sic!) Palms Casino.

Fans from Boston are different from Chicago fans who are very separate from Spurs, Kings and Clipper fans. *Clipper fans are a bit like us Kings fans were in 1998 when the team took a major upturn. Every fan group seems to prefer different drinks and snaks too. *At any moment in the food court area between Cox Pavilion and Thomas & Mack one can see T-shirts from 10-12 different NBA teams and frequently see several Euro team shirts.

This is Las Vegas and show girls have to do something in their off hours. They tend to be easy to spot: high heels, short shorts, halter tops, a scarf here and there, you get the idea. *And most of them are 5-10 to 6-2. Laker games are a good bet. Try not to be too obvious in your appreciation of the arts, like everyone else.

Walking thru the food court this week you rub elbows with coaches , GM's, scouts, players, front office staff, ESPN anchors, NBA writers, dozens of folk you've seen on TV. *This is the ultimate eye candy for the basketball junkie. For over the hill ballers like yours truly, I prefer to support the Arts.

Cox Pavilion is the preferred venue for watching summer league with a big high school gym feel, seating only on the sides in about 20 rows. The first row is about a yardstick behind the player benches so up close and personal is easy. *After every game the NBA sets up an autograph table and one of the top name draftees from the game sign autographs for a limited time. Two years ago bajaden and I stood chatting with Cousins mother watching while he was doing autograph booth duty. Gavin Maloof joined the conversation and Geoff Petrie ambled by admiring his latest draftee.

I dislike Rondo. He really isn't as great of a passer as everyone thinks he is, he can't shoot to save his life, and he'll lose his team a game just to get an extra assist.
