I will say Lebron or Michael Jordan, then the next person will say who he thinks is better and then he will make his own face off and then so and so. For example: larry Bird or Cryde Drexler next person says who he thinks is better. I think Larry is better. Then I make my own face off and then so on so on.

However, I don't even try to put Magic in a category; he was a ball player. I treat players like Kevin Garnett and Scottie Pippen and even Charles Barkley the same way. I'm not going to knock them because they're not the prototypical player; their diversity is what makes them great.

In Magic's case, his ability to play anywhere on the court made him one of the greatest players ever. And if I had to choose between Magic and Stockton as players, I'd take Magic hands down. But as far as pure point guards are concerned, I'd take Stockton.

:confused: Magic was a deadeye from the perimeter, didn't shoot a lot of treys, but he never really had to until he started to age. No team was ever dumb enough to dare him to shoot.

I'll grant that Stockton probably took a lot more perimeter shots than Magic over their careers, and that perimeter shooting is part and parcel with being a PG. Magic could post up just about every PG in the league so shooting jumpers was usually his last option.

Magic was definitely a mismatch, no matter who was guarding him. There were few with the size and quickness to match up against him. But that's why he gets classified as a "player," instead of trying to restrict him to the point guard position. He did way too much to just call him a point guard, if you ask me.

I have to agree with Superman on this one. Pippen was a way better defender, he was one of a few (and the only non-guard) who facilitated the triangle offense well, and he's got too many years of 6 rpg and 6 apg for TMac to stack up with him at this point. He not only carried the 94/95 Bulls, but he was probably the major reason that the 2000 Blazers nearly made it to the Finals. And I don't quite agree that he's any less athletic than McGrady. Pip could flush on anyone and he covered a ton of space on the court. I think his glaring weaknesses were his lack of a pull up jumper (which killed the opportunity to hit game-winners) and his fragile psyche when things weren't going well for him.

I think the Magic/Bird answer depends on who you saw more. In reality, they were peas in a pod.

Pierce,

The guy can flat out score, whether it's from getting to the line or burying a three in your face. Has great penetration and is one of the best clutch shooters in the game. He's also an underrated passer and defender imo. The only weakness that I see in his game is that he lacks the qualities of a leader and is not very vocal in the locker room. Vince Carter can score too, usually with his flashy dunks and that's about it, he's an erratic shooter and doesn't play defense and is injury prone.

Tough question. I would say AK47, right now. All-round talent, plays both ends of the court well, nice hustle and drive. Peja may have a higher "upside" but until he learns how to post up a midget, he isn't getting my nod over AK47.

Don't know if you know, but both Riley and Jackson were players. NBA TV aired a game from the 1972 Finals vs LA and NY last night and there was a play where Riley took it right at Jackson on a 1:1 drive and got a 3 pt play. When you see that, you have to remind yourself that it's the guys we know as coaches. Anyway, Jackson was a better player. He was a cerebral "utility" forward. Riley was basically a scrapper who mopped the floor with his jersey.

Russell by a light year over Wallace.

Pretty good question. Although Reggie wins this one, Christie has better output in rebs and assists and in the defensive cats. I frankly think that's more important than Reggie's upper-hand in scoring. Reggie's more important than Christie historically by a wide margin though.

I'd have to go with Lever because Richardson was plagued by cocaine use, although he was compared favorably to Magic Johnson at his best (and those comparisons actually weren't hype). Lever was probably the most consistent triple double guy in the league other than Magic for a handful of years.
