View Full Version : The Official "Please, for the love of God, do NOT hire Don Nelson!" Thread

There was a discussion in the radio today regarding Don Nelson telling 3 Western Conference teams (yes, the Kings were one of them) that if they want to make the playoffs this season, they need to fire their coach and hire him immediately.

I am not one of those "If the Kings fire/trade/sign so-and-so, I'll stop being a fan" kind of guy. Time marches on. Guys come and go. Things change.

...but this might be the one move devastating enough to shatter my faith in the Maloof-owned Kings.

DO NOT HIRE DON!

Seriously, that would be a freaking disaster. If the kings have any hope of making the playoffs they won't hire Don Nelson. yuck.

I hope it doesn't happen. I don't think Don Nelson would be able to help much at all. The King's biggest problem lately is just staying healthy. Unless Don Nelson can perform medical miracles, he won't be much help.

I'd make Don Nelson the starting point guard before I'd make him head coach.

STAY AWAY, Don Nelson. We don't want any.

While I entirely agree with the thought expressed in the title, it should probably read:

"Please, for the love of whatever deity you may hold sacred (or just for the appreciation of the sport of basketball if you have no particular deity you revere above all others), do NOT hire Don Nelson...or even invite him to lunch in Sacramento."

After RA and the other two coaches get done taking the knife out of their backs they should go kick Nelson's ***.

Planning playoffs? Call Nellie

Oakland Tribune, Feb 6, 2005

DON NELSON PUT the word out to three Western Conference teams this week: If you want to make the playoffs this season, fire your current coach immediately and hire me.:D

It's a bold statement, but in regards to the Kings, it's undoubtedly true; the Warriors, it's quite possibly true; and the SuperSonics, it's probably wishful thinking.

You see, Nelson will stop earning $5 million a year from Mark Cuban at season's end, and even at age 65, he still enjoys receiving monthly paychecks. He's definitely planning to coach somewhere next season.
So why not start the search now while some teams are desperate?

Like Sacramento:eek: , which thrust itself back into the playoff conversation by acquiring Ron Artest last week. Now if the Kings only had a coach whose philosophies were consistent with the wide-open playing styles of Artest, Mike Bibby and Bonzi Wells.
That's Nelson. (It is?? )

As for a possible return to the Warriors, there's just too much bad blood between Nelson and Chris Cohan for it to be even a remote possibility. That said, you wonder if the 61/2-year coach of the Warriors wouldn't be the best thing for Mike Dunleavy, just as he was for Chris Mullin.
Seattle has some interesting pieces. Then again, Denver has more, and Nelson already has a history of uprooting George Karl. Stay tuned. With Kevin Garnett on the trade block and Nelson available as a free agent, the Western playoff race could get real interesting.

Nelson isn't the answer. Depends on the question. For example: "How do you spell 60 regular season wins and no real chance to win a championship?":D

The Kings hiring Don Nelson would just be a part of Finley's master-plan to sabotage our franchise, thus accomplishing the goal of making Ron Artest head to the Spurs for the Ultimate Team

LOL!

Yeah, this Oakland Tribune guy has all the info... Does he NOT recall what happened between another Warrior player and Don Nelson? Nelson is NOT the kind of coach who can deal with "tempermental" players. Apparently the writer of this piece hasn't been around long enough to know that...

Nelson vs. Webber was bad enough. Nelson trying to deal with Artest and Wells is a Dean Koontz novel just begging to be written. Thanks but no thanks...

Sadly that statement works for Adelman too. :(And amazingly enough, the day a coach does win it all, he is no better a coach than he was the day before. Takes good coaching, the right mix of players and quite a bit of luck.

Having said that, I'd rather have Ozzie Nelson for coach. ;)

hey at least Don wants to actually win unlike Rick Adelman who just sits back and talks to his team about how to stay open and not cut.

hey at least Don wants to actually win unlike Rick Adelman who just sits back and talks to his team about how to stay open and not cut. That's hardly fair or accurate. Thru the end of the 04-05 season, RA had a .618 winning percentage and D Nelson's was .575. A coach does not get his teams to win at a .618 clip by not wanting to win. And only 3 currently active coaches have higher career percentages thru last season. (None of whom are likely to be available to replace RA.)

what about this year? Do we really have anything to lose if we hire Don Nelson. I mean the team is already in lottery boundry.

Yes... We have a good coach to lose next season. We've all had our frustrations with the guy, but Don Nelson would drive everyone nuts. No, no, no, no, and no.

There's no way in hell I'd want Don Nelson to coach the Kings. Rick Adelman is dealing with the hand that the upper management provided him. Team chemistry has been horrible most of the season, and is just starting to improve with the arrival of Ron Artest. I do not blame Coach Adelman for the season he's having.

But here's a few alternatives:

-Fire Adelman and hire Jerry Reynolds as head coach. Hire Grant as his assistant! :D

-Let a fan coach the team (like in the movie in the movie Eddie)

-Hire another coach from the outside (Nelson, etc.)

What do all of these scenarios have in common? I think any of these scenarios would have worse luck coaching the team than Adelman.

I know... let's let Carrottop coach... not.

:p

These threads are getting too silly. Let's continue to support the team for better or worse.

Well, just from reading some things that have been put in the media, I would think that the Maloofs are still very interested in retaining the services of Rick Adelman. I think Adelman said it best:

"But I'm a realist, too. I've got to get this team to play well. If we do OK, then you see what happens. If it doesn't play well, then you see what happens, too."

Don Nelson average playoff record per year:

2.6W 3.15L

Rick Adelman average playoff record per year:

4.53W 4.26 L

Don Nelson has missed the playoffs 10 of his 27 coaching years to Adleman's 2 of 15. He has also never won a conference championship, which Adelman has done twice. In short: You'd have to be crazy.

Only if he gets similar shoes to match Artest's. Otherwise NEVER! I like Adelman, I don't mind if we get a new coach as this point. I'll like him to stay, but if there must be a change, it better not be Nelson.

I'm embarassed to admit this but as others have speculated they have indeed cut their hair. One of them was even recently on VH1's Celebrity Fit Club trying to shed vanity pounds (everyone else on the show is severely overweight).

I've got nothing against Nellie, other than I don't want him coming to Sac.
